Though not mentioned MI did pass HB 4718 which bans the panic defense. The bill was presented to the governor today.

It's not much but it's one of the bills I've been waiting on for over a year and still very important.

I "heart" it because I love you and appreciate all of your work. I don't LIKE this at all!

Love your work. Thanks for all you do!

One thing I'm wondering for future updates. Would it be possible to make the maps a bit interactive? Perhaps if you click on a state, you could see the recent anti-trans laws that have passed? I know there are databases of bills that are out there, but a quick way to summarize what laws have actually passed and are in effect would be very useful.

God, I'm really starting to hate this country. Can't believe I gave six years to the military.

"The methodology used is primarily qualitative, with a scoring-rubric element for the worst bills. Part of the methodology is my own expert assessment of laws, of which I am well equipped to do."

YES, yes you are. AKA, fuck yes.

Erin - thank you for the frequent map updates! Very helpful.

The huge looming question here is, of course, what will happen to the “blue” states in the event of a GOP presidency (very likely now) and GOP congress/senate (also possible)….especially the states with trans sanctuary laws. Will these states be willing/able to maintain their protections, or will they be overcome by the full force of the federal gov’t? Given the ferocity of anti-trans activity since 2023 - and the expectation of even worse under a Trump administration - I am suspecting and fearing that it’s the latter scenario that will play out. Anyway this is the million dollar question. Since this issue is probably on everyone’s minds, Erin - is it worth devoting some future journalism/ articles to it? Or are there too many unknowns?

If they get in (GOP), we're fucked everywhere. Make no mistake. Trans people won't be the only ones on the chopping block ... just the first ones. They will destroy the Constitution and our Democracy. Just read some summaries of Project 2025, the first pages before they start explaining in detail, and your questions will be answered there. Don't buy the book and add to The Heritage Foundation's revenue; just get that summary somehow. I've got it on my computer, but it's too large to upload. Dictatorship & right-wing evangelistic rule will become effective the day of the inauguration. They're using the Nazi playbook blow-by-blow regardless of who wins, but accelerated if the GOP wins the Presidency.

KingRay- I agree mostly but not entirely with your post. It’s important to remember that many of the bluest states have a lot of population and economic clout - CA, IL, NY, WA for example. As you said, it isn’t just trans people that are part of the project 2025 push, it’s a lot of things, and these states are likely to resist broad swaths of it. It’s just a question of …can they hold out, or will the new administration be so extreme and forceful that it will overrun them. For the most extreme parts of the anti-trans agenda - like criminalizing existence in public - the bluest states are unlikely to enforce this on their own, and if federal agents or troops try to enforce it within the borders of blue states, it’s likely to precipitate a conflict of some sort.

The military, per the constitution and federal law, is not allowed to be used as a police force on US soil. The federal military is not even allowed to be used in a state without that state’s governor explicitly asking them.

So, if we’re to the point where federal troops are being used in the blue states to enforce anti-trans laws (or any other laws), then the president is already running roughshod over the constitution.

Which is exactly what I fear the GOP will want to do in pursuit of Project 2025 goals. It stuns me that this danger is so real and obvious, yet people seem to want to vote for it anyway.

If the Constitution is destroyed and the government replaced with Dictatorship, there is nothing they can't do. They'll get access to health records and a bunch of things to identify us and make sure we get the axe. Same with being anything but white in this country. Don't know what you're thinking, but it will no longer be the United States of America. Chump promises he'll destroy everything and so does Project 2025.

Have you even read it to be disagreeing? I don't think you have. You underestimate those people by a long shot. And THAT'S how the moron got elected in the first place, by people who underestimated his clout. Sure, there will be another war, but folks better wake up and vote so it doesn't happen that way. That's the only way we'll slow them down. If we stay the course of Democracy, not whatever the Nazis called their form of government. Oh, Socialism.

Gee, this was a while ago, but check Florida out. They're managing to screw over healthcare with Roe vs. Wade loopholes. Just like they don't want women managing their own bodies, they don't want trans people managing their own bodies either. If it becomes Federal law, no State will be safe. I think someone liked this post or something, because I was drawn back to my comments. Texas is trying to stop other states from being refuge states. If that asshole gets in office again, it will all cave and those Project 2025 people will win all their lawsuits against the Federal government.

Hey do you know about Maryland SB119? It passed the house+senate but it's not clear if it was signed by Wes Moore. Did it automatically become law without a signature or did Wes Moore screw us? I haven't heard anything about it anywhere after it passed.

In addition to HB7577, Rhode Island also passed H8155 which simplifies the process for Rhode Islanders seeking to legally change their name by updating the statute on name change during divorce to be gender inclusive, allowing name change court costs to be waived for those who can’t afford them, removing the requirement for public notice or publication of a name change, and allowing name change records to be kept confidential if doing so is warranted by the person’s safety needs. 🙌🏻
