Yosha's achievement is a first for transgender women in chess. This comes after FIDE, the international organization for chess competition, announced restrictions on transgender players.
Segregation of men from women in chess is nonsense unless it is simply to give women less tournament money. This would be a good SNL skit given how ridiculous this is.
Charlotte Clymer sheds light as to why there is gender segregation in Chess: It's because the Men are sexist douchebags and the women aren't safe and they need opportunity. If it weren't for the men, there would be no need for the segregation: https://charlotteclymer.substack.com/p/banning-trans-women-from-chess-tournaments
This is genuinely inspiring. WIM is really hard to achieve - you have to reach a certain (very high) overall standard of chess (measured by getting a rating of 2200; your rating goes up and down every game depending on who you play and whether you win, lose or draw) and you also have to have very strong results (called "norms") in three tournaments, which means beating players that already have the title that you want, and also scoring a high number of points (exactly how many depends on how good your opponents were).
Yosha's final norm required her to get 6.5 points from nine games; she managed that with five wins and three draws, getting there with a game to spare. She also won the tournament!
Congratulations Yosha on your well deserved accomplishment! :) We are grateful for you and your tenacity in fighting and standing up for our rights and the ever growing list of injustices in the world!!!
This is truly wonderful. The Queen’s Gambit of the trans world.
Congratulations to her! I hope she becomes a grandmaster!
I *do* hope she is a good person in a sport known for having assholes as grandmasters (e.g. Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov).
She very much is
That's awesome to hear! I wish her nothing but the best!

So inspiring - bravo Yosha!
I am also very proud of Yosha. It's definitely important to make sure that trans people are not excluded from the same opportunities as everyone else.
Brilliant!
Awesome
