The wording mentions ICAO. I wonder if they're backtracking because of the six month rule. Many countries require those entering to have passports that will be valid for at least six months. If the State Department can invalidate passports whenever it wants, then that could cause problems for all Americans traveling, not just transgender Americans.

There are a lot of challenges, but yes, I think the six month rule likely plays a part. The prospect of Americans being in another country and having their passports invalidated would encourage Americans to stay where they are.

No, but it's a good sign that they don't feel confident enough to do it their evil plan openly.

the cost of going around invalidating passports would be immense, and when they started fucking it up (as they do with 100% of the things they attempt) they would call into question the validity of all american passports, and that would be a large loss for wealthy americans. They can't really fuck with that, especially without any legal authority to do so.

Great! Now we have I hope no more than Jan 20th 2029 to find out if that holds.

Sooner is better. [IMPEACHMENT!, for all of them!]

I'd like to think that this is a good sign, but it's probably due to the fact that they've lost too much personnel to invalidate all the passports at once.

Once again the administration's cruelty is matched only by its incompetence.

Hahaha, looks like the Almighty State Department has contracted “TACO” Disease!!

I just recently applied and got my passport with my correct gender in less than two weeks. I suggest that all in the trans community get their passports because by the time our passports expire and are ready for renewal, I predict that MAGA will not exist anymore, at least not in its present form! Once Trump is dead and gone, and the Afterparty is over, I believe that cult will destroy itself even further and the evangelical religious cult will die out as well! That will be another Boon to society! The sooner this government collapses the sooner we can get on with creating a True Social Democratic Government, FOR THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE! FDT! FJDV! AND FUCK THE TRUMP REGIME!!! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

This is very good news (Erin, as always, thanks for reporting), but it is still a huge problem that the state department wants to revert sex/gender markers on the next renewal, even if for many people that’s eight to ten years from now. All trans advocacy organizations should be working hard in courts and with their representatives to convince the passport people not to do this. Wrong markers, especially for biologically female people (i.e. those who are fully transitioned and have had surgery) place them at great risk when traveling. Having birth sex on a current passport makes no sense.

let's not use the language of transphobes (biologically __) to make distinctions between groups of trans people. looking like a woman and being pre-op for example doesn't put you at any less risk of violence if you come under scrutiny.

otherwise you could use your same logic maliciously to imply it'd be bad to give correct markers to transmascs who aren't far enough along in their transition to stay under the radar.

which is exactly a way that the supreme court argued to defend their decision, in fact.

And what happens after they expire?? And don't folks renew their passports before they expire? What happens then?

They issue the new one with sex assigned at birth.

They were testing the waters and decided the temperature wasn't just right. That's all. Whether because the GQP is currently feuding with itself over the Epstein files, or because one too many eyes were looking their way... but the moment they feel secure in their power again, watch out.

A win is a win, right? Even if it sounds like their hand was forced, this provides much needed stability. Now if only we could get them to reinstate getting new passports for all trans and non-binary folx!

This is great news if indeed it holds true. Unfortunately for those who where not fortunate enough to get a new passport this will not help. My hope however is that after the election of 2028 we get a new president who will realize the reality of life and put into effect a law allowing people who want to adjust their passports that right. However we must never stop striving to get what is a right.

I would not trust them. I would assume that the idea that passports are valid "until we invalidate them under federal regulations" does not need to be explicitly stated, and would be understood to apply to ALL passports issued under ANY circumstance. In that case, all the absence of the sentence does it return to unstated invisibility the threat that has always and will always be there. An entity that can grant validity can always rescind it "under federal regulations."

Oh, let us give thanks to HIs Majesty for not immediately slaying us all. We should'st be grateful for clearly He is being most merciful and kind to grant us this brief reprieve. Alas, we know He, once again ,must reverse course in deference to the Harsh Winds of Patriarchy. But then who are we but sturdy, brave peasants, ill suited to understand these matters of State and Kingdom.

Expiration date is still putting a "Sell by" date on us to decide to stay or leave the country, especially for those of us that well into our current 10 year passport. It's not just passports, what happens to Medicare/Medicaid, Real ID, SSA Retirement and Disability, IRS/Tax Related... this entire act of pointless cruelty puts us in legal limbo.

I don't trust this administration, they change the rules from one minute to the next.

I give you as exhibit A:

"The Epstein files are on my desk"

"There are no Epstein files"

"We already released the Epstein files"

"Trump doesn't want any of the Epstein files released"

"Trump is pushing Republicans to release the Epstein files"

Pick your poison. 😡
