Now the Republican party has now openly gone full nazis these laws are nothing but thinly dequised genocide. These Republicans must be reported to the International Court in the Hague for prosecution of crimes against humanity. Same as Hitlers minions.

What I wouldn’t give to go back in a time machine to, say, 20 years ago, when it was neither acceptable nor common to run this kind of hate campaign. Being Republican back then was mainly about fiscal and tax policy and to some extent foreign policy. That not to say that trans people back then were universally loved and accepted, just that this kind of hate campaign wasn’t considered acceptable, or even something the GOP necessarily wanted to do.

I don’t know if the current conflagration can be turned around. I guess our best remaining hope is that the elections next week - not only presidential, but the many congressional and local races - turn out better than expected. Regardless of that, even being in this situation in the first place is dismal and utterly deplorable. I think it can ultimately be traced ultimately to the Obergefell SCOTUS decision in 2015 and the decision by the right wing bullies that they needed a new target going forward. Also the prevalence of right wing think tanks and legal groups that have had influence on policymakers.

As bad and as things are today, 2004 was not as anodyne as you remember. Part of the GW Bush re-election strategy to put anti-gay marriage amendments on state ballots to drive Republican turnout. Evidence at the time was that it helped Bush in several states. Thankfully, the country moved fast on gay marriage, and we got Obergefell in 2015. As you say, the right wing bullies needed a new target and now attack trans people. I hope we as a country can move as fast on trans rights as we did on gay marriage, so this is last generation that has to fight to be who they are.

These ads prove that Republicans have nothing to offer the nation other than fear, demagoguery, hate, and division.

May the ENTIRE MAGA movement utterly fail at the polls next week and may we finally cast them into the dustbin of history.

Thank you for such a detailed and informative post. What I do like is that those felon followers are identifying themselves as haters. This campaign has also identified democrats who keep silent and do not speak out. Silence = Death was a bumper sticker I had years ago. The people who remain silent are so weak. I offered a bumper sticker to someone who is what some would describe inclusive. She said "oh I would never put a sticker on my car. I am afraid someone will damage it."

My reply was "well if I were not an atheist I would be thanking god you are not raising children." Hanging in here with like minded loving people has gotten me through this campaign so far. THANKS

Republican politicians; “May your knives chip, and shatter”

(This is a curse, essentially wishing for someone's tools or abilities to fail drastically, particularly when referring to someone who relies heavily on their skills or tools for their livelihood or reputation; it's a way of saying you hope they become complete failures in their endeavors.)

All the hundreds of millions spent opposing trans healthcare likely would more than pay the cost many times over...

It won't be any one thing that secures us a win next week (however satisfying it 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 would be if the GQP's murderous fixation on trans kids was what yeeted their plans for the federal government into the garbage disposal). It'll be 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, little and large, driving every demographic Republicans have declared to be UnPeople to vote blue all the way up and down their ballots; we can only hope that enough people have read the writing on the wall to stop this country from coming completely off the rails.

In years past the Trans community was a focused effort from local support groups, who stood up to the oppression of anti trans groups and individuals. Those groups have greatly disappeared lately. The largest part of the problem is people that the vast majority of people have never met or talked to a trans person. When people are actually exposed to a trans person, they usually don’t want to talk about the issue. There are solutions to the problem, but it calls for discussion and honest talk. But the exposure of many trans people, too often is associated with the personal loss of employment, visitation rights, open hate and discrimination. If some protections are provided for trans people’s, then there can be more open discussions. This can be done by passing the Equality Act in Congress, giving the trans community protection against discrimination. It would force politicians to discuss the discrimination issues and anti trans legislation, with the only person who is never present to defend themselves, the trans person.

Follow the money, follow necessity. I wonder how much of the money spent on these ads comes from Elon, how much from traditional religious right financiers, and so on. Trans bashing is probably an easy sell with conservatives. 5-10 years ago there was talk about how almost everyone in the US had never knowingly met a trans person.

Things will change; they have to, but it may not be easy (and how much of getting here has been!?)
