NYT is a true enemy of transgender people. They should be ashamed of themselves for putting their personal beliefs above science.

I will never, and I mean never, subscribe to them again, nor even trust their reporting. It's offensive AF that they'd promote such a piece, this way. I realize they're a complex organization, and there are some good things they publish at times, but FFS, this is a personal slight on the whole LGBTQ community.

It isn't so much that the NYT's doesn't get it. They absolutely get that they can use the trans community, throwing us under the proverbial bus, and then point to their shitty coverage of trans issues as evidence that they aren't always supportive of "liberal" issues like human rights and dignity.

We all know the real toll but the times just wants "thoughtful liberals" and "persuadable conservatives" to up their readership, their wallet, and their influence.

This is what yellow journalism looks like and we are the bait. Any support of the NYT's by us or our friends and family harms us. And they are showing us that do not value lives or the truth, just money and power.

all of this. I never liked the NYT, but I'm fed up now.

Proud to say I wrote a scathing letter to their editor, then cancelled my subscription.

I blocked all my email notifications from them yesterday. The politics coverage is one thing, but this is a whole other thing.

Fucking hell, New York Times, you're putting me in one absolute bastard of an uncomfortable position here... you're forcing me to agree with 𝘋𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘥 𝘍𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘱 about something: your journalistic integrity (or rather, lack thereof).

And, having typed that sentence, somehow, without vomiting all over my keyboard, I now need a shower and a 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 strong drink.

It wouldn’t be a proper discussion of gender affirming care if it didn’t revolve entirely around white, cisgender British women.

I hope that the professionals ie. doctors, lawyers, judges, politicians, journalists, etc. that are pushing back and defending trans people know how deeply appreciated they are. As are all of our allies.

When people are hateful of gay or trans people it's their own insecurities getting out of control.

Only fear can elicit such a strong response.

This is a very good point, and I think well grounded in psychology. The subtleties of just what kind of hateful phobia is connected to what buried feeling may only be found with trained professional effort, but it's clear that most people who "irrationally" despise ordinary humans for being who they are are doing it to avoid confronting serious pain of their own that is at least in some sense related to what they condemn.

That's not the same as saying homophobes are closet gays, etc., which I don't buy at all. But there is that series of events somewhere in the past that the person is lashing out to avoid. If they could just confront and deal with that, we could all be so much better off. Instead they ruin other people's lives while doing nothing to help themselves.

Well we all know the NYT is crap, the only good thing about them is Wordle and they bought that from someone smarter and better.

I'm glad that you are specifically documenting the overt bias that the media is engaging in. Years from now, when society has *finally* decided to accept trans rights, like they did with gay rights, I'm going to be able to show receipts to all the people who say "well, we didn't know".

Thanks for covering this- and for all your work. I stopped reading and subscribing to the NYT when I learned about their anti trans bias last year. I had hoped that they had improved, but apparently not. One expects it from conservative news, but it’s devastating and enraging when it comes from a liberal paper.

The NYT continues to devolve into utter garbage. I just wish more people would see that this is not even close to the NYT they knew and that it deserves little respect these days, if any at all.

Are you a human being?

Then;

Just after you were born, a person, or people, gave you some measure of loving kindness, some amount of compassionate understanding. If not, you would not be alive now. That was your introduction to life, the implicit knowledge that loving kindness and compassionate understanding are indispensable for human life to exist.

The foundation of human life, therefore, is loving kindness and compassionate understanding.

As we age we are taught otherwise by damaged people. 💔

Their misdirection is rarely intentional. They are simply sick due to their own early learning experiences/trauma.

Once this is understood, we can seek help to dismantle the wrong thinking that we were taught and insert, through daily practice, right thinking, and thereby right actions.

The teacher that I have learned from is Thich Nhat Hahn, and the practitioners who learned from him before me.

You may, of course, learn from someone else, but please do...learn that is.

that's all doctrinally sound, but, I mean, what is your point here? Given the context, this reads like spiritual bypass.

You don't go around looking for people living in poverty and sickness so you can remind them that they should be compassionate, do you? So, why should trans-people be held to a higher standard when they are likewise under threat?

(from one Buddhist to another.)

I too cancelled my subscription. I'm sad because I've been reading it since I used it to study for the SAT in high school. But I won't support the biased reporting on this issue. I'll get my news from NPR/WNYC and other excellent sources, like Erin In the Morning - far better than the NYT on where it's at with transgender issues! "All the Trans News That's Fit to Print"!
