The latest New York Times article interviews transgender leaders to argue transgender rights will come through giving up on sports and being nicer to anti-trans campaigners like Rowling.
“The way to fight fascism is to appeal to Nazi sensibilities!” Really hard-hitting stuff from the NYT these days, huh? At this point I think it’s clear that the publication has been captured by right-wing interests
I am a career professional nurse, with a 25-year history of trans activism. I am nearly 70 years old. Fuck JRK (oops, did it again). Fuck the NYT. Our lives are on the line.
The reason why Dems lost is because a huge chunk of young progressives didn’t come out and vote specifically because the Dems didn’t strongly advocate for Trans and Palestinian rights. It’s not the other way around. Even though not all people understand Trans rights they get equality, autonomy, and freedom. They get genocide. They get the domestic genocidal anti trans laws and they get the Palestinian genocide.
We gotta get over the bitterness though, because the election is over and the fight has only just begun. I understand the schadenfreude directed at MAGA immigrants or protest/non-voting leftists who will be hurt by Trump, but they are ultimately going to be part of the coalition that fights fascism alongside us, or else all we’ll win is a chance to laugh at each other from our separate train cars, headed to the same “deportation” camps in Texas
Nah, screw that. They better cut us all in line for the trains. The one small shred of pleasure to be drawn from all this will be in the suffering of the idiots who chose it.
I was more talking about the protest/non-voting folks. But honestly, I’m from rural Missouri, and I know some Trump voters. Some of them are true believer Nazis, and others don’t have a thought in their head, and are just ENTIRELY captured. When they eventually see with their own eyes how Trump plans to hurt them individually, they do sometimes have a crisis of maga-faith. But, I’m not counting on them or giving them any energy, mostly thinking of the leftists who didn’t vote for Kamala
Just a li’l power imbalance there. Room for disagreement needs to start after establishing basic human rights. My existence isn’t a point of negotiation.
It's the same with extreme-right political parties in my country who do not talk with transgender support organisations, yet they do believe someone like Cass.
Because apparently, THAT person made the only actual REAL piece of research that is the only one we need to believe.
When asking these parties for a declaration of some of their conflicting points on trans issues, it is strikingly common for them, in the first response to my questions send back "I don't think we will agree on this..." and I'm like "No, we won't. Stop thinking that there needs to be a ground to agree on when you base your viewpoints on lies and hate, and I base mine on facts and my lived experience of being trans! There is NO middle ground between lies and truth!"
It is wild that these parties think that human rights are simply up for debate...
🫂 exactly. It can be important to find common ground—but common ground requires good faith discussion. I run into the Cass report on this side of the pond too, and proponents ignore critiques of it from medical researchers as being “political” or “alternative viewpoints” at best, saying that “both sides can cite studies, so you need to weigh based on convictions.” That isn’t good faith… it’s just picking sources to ignore.
The number of supposedly professional people who can not read or hear of the Cass Report's "inclusion/exclusion criteria" and realize that it is "cherrypicking" by ignoring almost all the data there is is a bit shocking me.

While the Cass report itself IS a political piece of work.
"It's the same with extreme-right political parties in my country who do not talk with transgender support organisations, yet they do believe someone like Cass."
Eh they aren't nice to us. JKR has said and boosted despicable things against trans people. That's why so many of us don't like her. That and her insistence that every trans woman is "a cosplaying man" who presents existential danger to every woman on earth. Bullshit.
And why do I feel like the "concessions" would never end but encompass more and more of us, and our rights?
Dear cis people: we surrender. We'll give in on sports. No "biological males" playing on the girls' team. No trans people playing sports at all. That's our compromise. And in return, you'll treat us like actual humans. Let us go to the bathroom in peace. Stop the violence and the hate.
Do we have a deal? Yeah, I didn't think so.
It doesn't end with sports, or bathrooms, or gender-affirming treatment for kids. It ends when we no longer exist.
Asking people to compromise their own humanity never goes well.
"Or the Palestinians should've been nicer to Netanyahu, Smotrich, and Ben-Gvir."
They should have been. I don't see how anyone complaining about their own impending "genocide light" can be endorsing the repetitively losing side of a war which itself wants to commit regular "kill them all outright as fast as we can" genocide.
If you are going to claim Hamas and Hezbollah should be encouraged and helped to succeed because somehow transgender people are the equivalent of those two, then I want nothing to do with you.
That's not what I am suggesting. The people Israel is killing are not merely Hamas and Hezbollah, but innocent Palestinian and Lebanese people who have done *nothing* but exist in those areas.
And if you are conflating Hamas and Hezbollah with Palestinians and Lebanese who are not them yet killed by the IDF, then I want nothing to do with you either.
Your claims of false equivalency are a pro-genocide distraction from the struggle of transgender people. The IDF and Israel are notably obeying the rules of land warfare to the point of properly prosecuting those of theirs who break them -- and those laws don't say it is a war crime for civilians to be killed. In fact, Israel's enemies in Gaza and Lebanon have quite the habit of building their facilities close by and under civilians -- and the war crime is theirs for doing so. Not Israel's. Those you claim are innocent, if they wanted not to be underfoot when Israel's enemies provoked a war, then just as the German people at the time had a fair share of responsibility for the war their government provoked, the Palestinians living with Hamas and Hezbollah should accept their responsibility for not having already rebelled against and evicting those genocidal terrorists.
And they should do so.
Similarly, if General Lee had really wanted to guard his beloved Virginia from war, he should have unloaded a shotgun into Jeff Davis' ear.
I’m not sure that this discourse really belongs here. You seem to have directed a lot of anger at Leah Abram. The rights and wrongs of the Near East don’t need to be litigated within the trans* community in this place/in relation to this article.
I'm not interested in saving Orthodox Judaism as there is no difference between them and fundamentalist Christians as they both would outlaw us.
I can't support Islam either. Here's an interesting twist everyone should consider because of a Google search result. Are you willing to toss some of us, as well as all LGB, under the bus? I, personally, would not throw out my intersex brothers and sisters to have privileges for myself. We are all in this together!
"Transgender men and women are recognized and accepted in many Islamic cultures around the world. In fact, the idea of a man or woman identifying as a member of the opposite gender is more likely to be accepted than that of a man or woman expressing sexual desire for someone of their own gender."
A poll by the Public Religions Research Institute found that Jews are the religious group most sympathetic to trans people. 7 out of 10 Jews said they'd be comfortable learning a friend is trans, and half of Jews said they would be OK with gender-neutral pronouns.
The NYT is truly exceptional at framing trans existence and trans rights as a debate. They don’t seem to understand that JK is a joke to the world now—imo she can’t be meaningfully worse than she is now and also can’t ever meaningfully recover from the damage she’s caused. No matter how I look at it, I can’t understand why they keep giving a microphone to someone who is obviously an extremist and far past her time of relevance. The NYT doesn’t understand that association with JK is instant ick in today’s world and it’s truly sad (in the pathetic way). I really wish we could revive the pressure on NYT to reform that we had last year or so; their constant, misleading trans coverage makes me feel incredibly frustrated.
I love how all these cis pundits are putting transphobia out there like it's a new and shiny idea they just discovered: "check out my hot take, trans people are the enemy!" As if they aren't actually just succumbing to the past several years of relentless anti-trans propaganda. "The right hates trans people? Maybe they have a point!" Pretty soon they'll be asking us to apologize to Ken Paxton and Riley Gaines.
And also: does the NYT have like some kind of anti-trans article quota they have to meet? It's very can't-stop-won't-stop with those folks. Like a toddler with a nosepicking habit.
The NYT is just flexing its wings, having recently emerged from pupae stage, ready to launch into its new life as part of the captive neo-liberal execrable kakistocratic novofascist mediaverse; full-on anti-Trans bigotry is just the final adjustment from the larval stage into a genuine winged bringer of pulp best suited for lining a parakeet cage, adorning a post apocalyptic loo, or competing with Infowars or the Gateway Pundit.
As far as wealthy Scottish wannabe witches dwelling in actual castles while dining upon the bones of unlucky Trans children? Well. Beware tornadoes and flying farmhouses, I always say.
Oh, I know, it's just coming more frequently and less concern trolling, more openly phobic. The ideas that we're responsible for our own persecution and somehow we could achieve "more" civil rights by just surrending them up front are indeed toxic and frankly, cracked.
I’m just so sick of this bullshit. Trans rights are basic human rights. Why is this such a hard concept for some to grasp. And the ‘let’s be nice to bullies’?! I learned the hard way at 6 years old that being nice to bullies gets you nowhere so if that didn’t work as a kid, I highly doubt it will work with adult bullies.
“The way to fight fascism is to appeal to Nazi sensibilities!” Really hard-hitting stuff from the NYT these days, huh? At this point I think it’s clear that the publication has been captured by right-wing interests
Nothing stops fascism in it's tracks faster than appeasement. Just ask Neville Chamberlain! 🙄
“The way to fight fascism is to appeal to Nazi sensibilities!”
I really prefer the, "never give an a**hole an even break", approach myself. Too true it's a target* rich environment.
I have yet to figure out where/who the anti-transgender slant at the NYT comes from, it's bizarre ?!
*Metaphor!
Kathleen Kingsbury, the opinion editor https://www.nytco.com/press/kathleen-kingsbury-named-opinion-editor/ is pretty transphobic by reputation.
If there's an editor known for hate, the hate comes from the top.
TY!
I canceled my 20-year subscription to NYTimes earlier this year based on anti-trans framing and their coverage on Gaza.
History supports keeping the fight going. And going strong
I am a career professional nurse, with a 25-year history of trans activism. I am nearly 70 years old. Fuck JRK (oops, did it again). Fuck the NYT. Our lives are on the line.
To hell with JKR, Fuck the NYT!

Our list of allies grows thin 😅 I don’t respect anyone who didn’t vote, but I’d still fight Nazis with them
They will suffer for their choice, I assure you!
Do you really think that any-freakin-body who voted for Trump is going to ever join us in the fight?
No, but people that didn't vote or voted 3rd party will.
I was more talking about the protest/non-voting folks. But honestly, I’m from rural Missouri, and I know some Trump voters. Herd mentality?

Wonderful. Cass is an impostor.
Compromise never wins. Perhaps if you deciding where to go for dinner, but never on civil rights.
Your compromise becomes the starting point for their next move, and the next, and the next.
We cannot accept anything less than equal rights, period.
lol be nicer to JKR ICANT 😂

Just like the Jewish people should have been nicer to Hitler.
I'll pass on the recommendation. I don't placate hate.

Also, there are eight genders in the Jewish Talmud (granted, they’re more like intersex, but there’s a place for me as a M->F trans woman there!) https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/the-eight-genders-in-the-talmud/
A poll by the Public Religions Research Institute found that Jews are the religious group most sympathetic to trans people. 7 out of 10 Jews said they'd be comfortable learning a friend is trans, and half of Jews said they would be OK with gender-neutral pronouns.
I’m, no, I will throw nobody under the bus. Where did you get that idea?
I am so glad I cancelled my NYT News subscription.
Me, too; more than a year ago. The only news I want to hear from them is that we bankrupted them and the doors are shutting.
The NYT is truly exceptional at framing trans existence and trans rights as a debate. Max, the idea that the NYT has a quantifiable level of time-bound anti-Trans hatefulness to spew makes more sense to me than anything explanation.
I'm afraid it's clickbait to infinity...

No. Fuck JK Rowling now, and forever.
