They had to look long and hard to find the studies to support the results they wanted and to support their confirmation bias.

Backed and paid for, I suspect, by a billionaire TERF and transphobic children's book writer, too!

The whole of the gender critical edifice, is fraud from beginning to end. Whether in the UK or US or anywhere, it is all only fraud.

Cass if I recall lied about collaborating with transphobes in Florida in her crafting her fraudulent "Review". The Hague is for her.

What we must bring to bear here in the US are federal anti-discrimination, right protections laws such as 42 U.S.C. § 1983, 18 U.S.C. § 241, & 18 U.S.C. § 242. It must become a part of the Dem Party Platform.

I can't bear thinking about all the children who will and are excluded from medical care due to bigotry and callousness

The UK has become so hostile to the existence of trans people that I've stopped visiting my sister who lives outside of London. The UK has now been added to the growing list of "No-Go Zones" for us trans folks.

How hard did they have to work to ignore the actual science? This is from Julia Serano in 2023. It has over 100 studies with links to the research at the end.

The NHS has crossed a dangerous line. Under the guise of “evidence-based medicine,” it is dismantling transgender healthcare while relying on studies that would never meet the gold-standard requirements applied to any other area of modern medicine.

This is not scientific neutrality — it is institutionalized discrimination dressed up as caution.

At the very moment transgender patients need stability, care, and medical support, NHS leadership has chosen to elevate selectively interpreted UK studies while ignoring decades of international research and clinical practice.

The gold standard of medical evaluation — comprehensive longitudinal evidence, balanced systematic review, and consensus across global professional bodies — has been abandoned in favor of uncertainty amplified into policy.

Let us be clear: demanding randomized controlled trials as an absolute prerequisite for care in this context is not scientific rigor; it is an impossible standard.

Medicine routinely relies on converging evidence when randomized trials would be unethical or impractical.

Pediatric mental health treatments, surgical interventions, and countless accepted therapies operate under precisely these principles.

Only transgender healthcare has been singled out for an evidentiary hurdle so extreme that it effectively guarantees denial of care.

This is not about protecting patients. It is about redefining science to justify exclusion.

By elevating methodological doubt above lived clinical reality, the NHS has chosen politics over patients.

The result is predictable and devastating: longer waitlists, shuttered services, frightened families, and vulnerable young people left without medically supervised care.

Removing healthcare does not make transgender people disappear — it only increases suffering while stripping away safe, regulated treatment pathways.

The global medical community has not suddenly abandoned gender-affirming care. Leading professional organizations across multiple countries continue to recognize it as medically necessary when delivered responsibly.

The NHS now stands increasingly isolated, promoting an interpretation of evidence that diverges sharply from international standards while claiming scientific authority it has not earned.

This moment demands outrage because the consequences are real.

Policies built on selective science erode public trust in medicine itself.

When healthcare systems apply one evidentiary standard to the majority and another to a politically targeted minority, they abandon the ethical foundation of medicine: do no harm.

History repeatedly shows that marginalized communities are the first to feel the impact when medicine bends to political pressure.

The NHS should have learned from that history — not repeated it.

Healthcare must never become a battleground where ideology masquerades as evidence.

The dismantling of transgender services is not cautious medicine; it is a retreat from compassion, consistency, and scientific honesty.

And those responsible must be held accountable — not only for the policies they enact today, but for the harm those policies will inevitably cause tomorrow.

i think it took me longer to read through this ai slop than the actual article

I guess you are not in favor of the trans community having access to healthcare that is important for the physical and mental health

you posting bad gen ai summaries in the comments section is not an indicator of my support for my own community

Commercial insurance companies in the states use these same bad faith tactics to form policies against efficacious medications that should otherwise be covered.

NHS, you know you’re being shady if you’re using the same tactics used by US insurance companies, which are some of the most evil businesses on the planet.

Outstanding reporting, Erin.

Clearly, the British government is responding to pressure from anti-trans groups in spire of the lack of real scientific proof. Yet how deep is anti-trans sentiment among British in general?

Amazing. You pick the studies that you like and glean the results you wanted from them. It makes them so much easier to evaluate.

This approach seems to be analogous to the theory that if you break a cookie up into enough little pieces, you can claim that the cookie contains no calories because each piece is too small to count.

And of course they ignored the evidence that banning gender affirming care for minors has resulted in an explosion of suicides and suicide attempts. Because why use data that doesn't conform to your already preconceived conclusions?

If the republicans win in November and keep the majority trans care of any type for any age will be banned in the US federally. These so called studies will be used for it. If you haven't yet, you better start stock piling your HRT, and hide some in different places. If you are planning on a surgery, you better get it done before 2027 as every insurance policy will exclude it come January 1st. If you have corrected things like your birth certificate, order extra originals at least 2 or 3 and hide them in different places. What has happened in Kansas will happen in every single red state with retroactively voiding identification. They are preparing for the next step in the genocide. Starting saving money and get what you can as far as passports (even if the gender marker doesn't correctly reflect you) making sure it is good through at least 2027. It will get significantly worse then it is now before things will get better (if they ever do in the USA). They will take our 2nd amendment rights away. We wont be able to vote. And more. I know the reality of this is scary. And hopefully it never gets to that point. But I am already ready and prepared. I saw this 5 years ago and started preparing then. Your life may very well depend on being prepared and ready. I saw this as a victim of conversion therapy at 11 years old. I say this as I currently live in Texas. Blue states will put up a fight but they will lose in the end. Good luck everyone. Be safe out there.

My passport with the correct gender marker expires in 2027 and I'm not sure what the hell I should do about it because I know they'll change it back without my consent when I renew it and I would have to wait until after January 2029 for sanity to prevail once again.

Mama Bear's avatar

Yes, same question, what should trans folx with accurate passports expiring in 2027 do? (And thank you Erin for this absolutely crucial piece—we must share it wide!!)

The socially conservative, greedily ambitious, and religiously fanatic are making common cause in order to unite and end Western democracy, and that cause centers upon marching triumphantly down a road paved with our corpses. If anyone ever needed evidence that Labour is just as useless as UKIP, LibDems, Tories, or any other neo-fascist nutters and mumsnetter proxies, here's proof. It's not just the feckless Democrats and their phoney war against MAGAnazis in the States. We Trans and gender expansive people, then all LGBTQ+, are being terminated in a massive blood sacrifice to give the oligarchical paedophile class BACK the power they had in the 1880s and feel have ALWAYS deserved. And they have made or will make that power institutionally aristocratic, inheritable, immutable, and immune to moderation by electoral means.

This is the way the world ends, in a welter of our blood and pointless victim blaming ennui.

Given the Levy Review proved a damp squib I suppose they needed to come up with another plan to take a shot at adult care.

Levy even included the odd intriguing little insight like "The GDCs have reported that the referred population has shifted from predominantly birth-registered males to a more even ratio of birth-registered females and birth-registered males" (para 16). In other words, the gender critical movement’s imagined tide of “confused, brainwashed and probably autistic women thinking they’re men” doesn’t exist. They’re just reporting closer to their share of the overall population.

This was alongside obvious stuff like waiting lists are too long and the wait itself causes serious mental health harm which exacerbates the waiting lists by complicating the care of individuals.

The headline outcome of the HRT review remains an insult for trans young people of course. Naturally there has been no combing over the details of how this review was conducted anywhere in the British press that I can see. It is embarrassing that I should have to read an American news site for accountability of the UK health system.
