Yeah, the "parental rights" excuse was useful till it wasn't useful. The parents who support their kids' lived experiences called the hypocrisy out and made it clear to everyone. So now they conscript the teachers they called "radical leftists" and "indoctrinators" to enforce their gender binary by bulldozing over any parental permissions to socially affirm their children.

The mask is off. They're just cruel, inhumane bigots.

They are quite clear about their goal being to drive us from public existence.

Yes. Their word "eradicate" is clear. That is their aim. But NOPE. We are not gonna let that happen.

It was never about parental rights just like it was never about fairness/safety in sports just like it was never about bathrooms just like it was never about making sure public records are accurate just like it was never about…

Anyone who thinks they’re being moderate or reasonable by supporting these things needs to understand they’re likely supporting trans peoples’ extinction (along with losing some of their own rights too)

This is so ripe for discrimination counter suits.

Celeste's avatar

Appeal, appeal, appeal, Scotus says its ok.

Tabris's avatar

The odds are not good, but this is obviously discrimination. Their other decisions haven’t exactly been clear cut anti-trans decisions. My hope is that the wording of this bill restricts physician treatment plans and shows exactly how big government is restricting personal freedoms and forces harm on the child.

Ruxine's avatar

its a massive violation of the first amendment, and scotus' credibility is already wearing thin.

There can be no compromise with people who believe we do not even exist.

We win, they lose -- they lose everything they want for us. That's all there is.

Yasha's avatar

Exactly. I keep seeing posts about "trans maximalists" being the problem. But all I really see are trans people fighting for their right to exist, fighting for their dignity, and fighting for basic access to healthcare. When your "opponents" believe you don't have a right to any of these, there is no middle ground.

Laura Davis's avatar

Surely seems like a violation of our right to Free Speech. Call me whatever I decide!! Or I might start misgendering every teacher. WTF. Like THIS stupidity will improve test scores, logical thinking, mental heath, etc etc

I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to assume MO(fo) is prepping to change its nickname to the “Show Me Your Genitals” state.

I have said repeatedly that transphobes have no stopping point, that it was never just about sports or medical care. This proves it. These people are obsessed with destroying trans people and all their civil rights. All of them.

Jessica Tymczak's avatar

So, if the parent had there child’s name changed legally, how would this even in the slightest be constitutional. First and Fourteenth Amendment

Mike Gelt's avatar

What is it with these anti-trans ignorant individuals in MO. I can not believe how vial they are or what gives them the right to dictate their beliefs to others. What proof do they have that any of these laws that they want will change anything in an individual’s makeup. These bills are discriminatory and the language vague. IT’S TIME TO VOTE THESE IGNORANT POLITICIANS OUT. THE PEOPLE OF MO NEED TO WAKE UP

We've been trying. The problem is the Dems threw everybody under the bus when they pulled out of EVERY rural space starting 30 yrs ago. The GOP there runs completely unaposed in most areas because Dem candidates can't get funding. Jess Piper is an exception (she has a stack) and has made some progress getting Dems to run/get funding, but it's a very, very tough slog. I fought as long as I could there for trans rights but when the orange turd won, our family said, fuck it, and we moved. I felt like if we stayed it would be the death of my trans daughter.

Mike Gelt's avatar

Interesting -very sorry to hear that have you written or called the Democratic national committee it may be different this midterm

GhostoftheWhiteRose's avatar

Lol. The DNC does not understand rural spaces (MO is considered flyover country)-there has been a lot of conversation there around this; change is slow, but it is happening. Even though I don't live there anymore, I would LOVE for things to be different, and I'm hopeful. Many people want change, and don't like all these anti-trans laws. A lot of it is going to depend on whether or not the recent GOP gerrymandering is judged to be lawful or not. MO has 8 congressional districts, and it was 6 GOP and 2 Dem. Now it's 7-1. Missourians are contesting this.

Mike Gelt's avatar

I hope they win the gerrymandering issue it’s very important to stop this. I think this election cycle will be different. It’s very important that the DNC participate in all areas this cycle

What the actual fuck?! If they want to play this game I say let’s play hardball. My full name is:

Elizabeth Jane Erbe Wilcox

They damn well better waste their time and energy by calling me that because I would no longer respond to my preferred name:

Liz

How assholian can they be?

How disrespectful of them to strip parents of their rights!

Teachers/parents, team up to help waste classroom time by calling each student by their full name! Make sure each student calls each other and their teachers by their full names!

Nurses/doctors, team up to waste patient time! Gonna be some loooong surgeries!

Ohhhh, imagine a corporate shareholder Zoom meeting! And no more cute “chosen names” for medications!

As you can tell my mind is just spinning with all these ideas. Most of which I would not actually practice beyond the classroom.

Susan Tuzzolino's avatar

Oh, I am so very grateful for this community! Your irreverence is exactly what I needed! For Erin for getting this info out there so we can respond in kind. Keep standing strong everybody!! Our courage is contagious!!

Sarah's avatar

Looks like I'll be going to speak at more Missouri sub committees this year 🤦🏻‍♀️

Erin Whitla's avatar

But I thought the zealots claimed this was all about respecting parental rights. 🙄

A non-story story. That bill has exactly ONE sponsor -- the guy who filed it. Reps file crazy bill like this all the time. Not exactly new IMHO. https://legiscan.com/MO/bill/SB1085/2026

Joan the Dork's avatar

Time and time again, we've seen anti-trans legislation fall on its face in one state only for the exact same bill with the exact same wording, just with different sponsors, pass into law somewhere else. It is 𝘢𝘭𝘭 worth paying attention to. It is 𝘢𝘭𝘭 dangerous. Even if it isn't likely to pass now, shining a light on it shows what the fascists are planning to do next- what they 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 do when and where they 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 the support. That alone makes it worth reporting on.

Don Jackson's avatar

Still super important for these stories to be reported. If for no other reason than the feedback and discussion in here helps us (well, certainly me) understand and discern the illogic, the bigotry, the cruelty, so we are better able to respond intelligently to these attitudes, which we encounter wherever we live.

Riki's avatar

Maybe. But looks like another “message bill” to me. I also think there’ a trans panic effect to spotlighting every crazy thing Reps do (and there’s a lot). Trans ppl and affirming parents are already more than scared enuf w/o making a major story out of 1 crazy bill that’s not going anywhere at this pint. Just my opinion, of course.

RDB1172's avatar

Not new in the state of Missouri. They do file bills all the time. Heavily Catholic, Baptist, Evangelical, and white nationalist state. I live in this piece of shit state, albeit close to Illinois and the City of St. Louis. I would do anything to leave, but can’t because of my husband’s job, pension, and healthcare through the union. It is disgusting here. So happy my gay child made it out.

Leah Abram's avatar

Fuck anyone who doesn't call this trans genocide.

It doesn't have to look like the Holocaust or Gaza to be genocidal.
