How weird. The party of economic freedom telling business where they can or can not spend their money when they want to dissociate themselves from bigotry.
The problem that made the anti-Israel-BDS law pass muster was that it applies to what the government wanted to associate itself with. The problem with this proposed law is that it explicitly bars private entities from disassociating themselves from whatever entities they wish, and methinks it’s a first amendment violation on account of the right to peaceably assemble. Does any lawyer back me up or contradict me?
Sure seems that way to me. Not a lawyer tho. I don't understand how a business can refuse to serve LGBT people if they so choose, but a business won't be allowed to refuse to work with a company that's anti LGBT if they so choose. Seems like a legal double standard.
Imagine if these republicans worked this hard to end homelessness. The amount of time and energy they spend trying to force their hate could be redirected to be such an amazing force for good. Imagine that relentless drive aimed at building up and supporting their neighbors in need. It’s sad to see how blinded by hate these people are.
"Don't tell us what we can and can't say to marginalized people! We should also have the right to refuse business and services to whomever for whatever!" But also, "You can't refuse business to us for our bigotry! That's discrimination!"
I never fail to be astounded by their double standards.
Missouri used to be a politically middle-of-the-road state that presidential candidates would fight over, so it’s really sad how far it has tacked to the right, and becoming a leader in anti-trans legislation. Missouri was the source of an attorney general’s attempt to essentially ban adult trans care in the state last April, which fortunately was blocked by a court. Even so, the state seems to rival Florida and Texas in its drive to make trans people as miserable as possible.
In general, the US population has had it too good for too long and has become complacent. The extremist are taking advantage of everyone being asleep at the wheel. I just hope there are enough people that have woken up to turn this around. But at this moment, I don't have very much optimism.
Far past time for anyone to believe the First Amendment ever mattered to the power players on the right. There is no use of authority that is off limits when they're circumscribing behavior or identity
How would something like this work? Each time a company decides not to renew an ad campaign or change a provider of some service an investigation is launched? a lawsuit is filed?
Never mind the bigotry and stuff we already expect from these people, I just want to know how something like this is even supposed to work?
Yikes. I can see this being proposed in Florida next. Especially given HB 599 and its intended impact on non-profits receiving state funding and certification and other businesses doing business with the state. Trying to micromanage control over private businesses that engage in commerce with governmental entities cannot possibly go well.
This bill doesn't look like it bans business from boycotting companies with pro-trans policies. This law is blatantly discriminatory and it can't be constitutional. IANAL but I hope it's challenged in court
Maybe the businesses should say they're refusing to do business with X for religious reasons. "Because Jesus said to love each other and hate speech is not love." I know it won't happen, but it'd be awesome!
Holy hell. so companies have a right to discriminate against us now. But they can’t discriminate against other rich corporations. This country is such a mess. And the biggest part of the problem is a bred complacency. The vast majority of US citizens are not interested in targeting trans people. The vast majority of US citizens want to cease fire in Palestine. But they won’t rise up. Complacency is complicity. If you can’t sit still, and watch, what is happening, then I invite you to join me. Poster your neighborhood with silent agitators. Arm yourself with posters and wheat glue. Form a small affinity group, and help educate your community.

It’s logically consistent if the goal is to drive transgender people out of public life.

That presumes these Republicans are Christians and not Christian Fascists.
I always will hold onto hope that people will see the errors of their ways and return to the light.

My dad was from St. Louis. 🏳️⚧️ comedienne Stacy Cay is from Kansas City. It really sucks that Missouri has swung to the right. 😢
Yes, the AG and Josh Hawley in particular seem overly eager trying to follow in Florida's footsteps. We're fighting but it's tough

So ashamed of my home state. Freedom for me but not for thee.

Fascists gonna fascist. What a shock.

Let’s see how many companies actually have the guts to LEAVE Missouri. THAT is what I’d like to see.
There’s no reasoning with conservatives. Morally bankrupt, illogical, hypocritical trolls that they are
If this isn’t government mandated speech then idk what is. Should immediately be struck down on 1st Amendment grounds
