The Attorney General of Missouri just unilaterally banned most adult gender affirming care. This decision is one of the most cruel policies ever released and represents a new front in this fight.
If, as seems clear, this is based on a perversion of the scientific literature, then the way forward is also clear: a lawsuit for violation of due process and equal protection, immediate petition for an injunction and, finally, the finest expert testimony at trial that money can buy.
This last is absolutely imperative. The science is in our corner; they have to lie about the science to prevail, and they apparently have no problem with that.
Another thing that might be nice to do is file a separate action with the state bar seeking censure and revocation of his law license for what must be a profound violation of ethics. He has abused his position by acting either with malice or with culpable negligence in derogation of medical standards to cause harm to a great number of suffering people. Such an action might not prevail, but at the very least it would send a message -- and not just to him, but to all attorneys general thinking of doing the same thing.
I wish nothing but Nightmares & Hellish migraines on these lawmakers. I’m not a praying woman, but will make a very special exception in this instance.
This is not America, it’s more like a 3rd world religious hellscape.
I am a parent of an awesome transgender son as well. My heart breaks for your family because you have to go through these fascist times in your state. Stay strong and keep fighting for your son.
What the hell even is a "social contagion test"? God I can't wait for the Republican Party to get what's been coming for them for the better part of a century.
How the hell is this legal??? Lambda Legal and the ACLU need to challenge this immediately. These "lawmakers" should burn in whatever hell they imagine.
That's exactly it. It's NOT legal, but so what? Who would enforce what's legal? For me, living in FL, any legal appeals would go up through courts w/ DeSantis-appointed judges. From there, SCOTUS, I guess - and we all know how that would go.
The thing is that, even if this EO is tossed right away, it will do four things: (a) terrify trans people even more than they already are, (b) move the Overton window, (c) inspire other states to do the same thing, and (d) serve as a useful trial balloon to see what sticks and what doesn't.
The thing is, those with power ultimately determine what's "legal." BIPOC have long known this. We have to take power from these fanatics! Donate to the ACLU and other such orgs if you can, demonstrate in the streets when and where you can, and be out and outspoken if you can!
or get your doctor to call their prescription into a kansas or illinois pharamacy, esp if you're on injectables and can get the higher concentration solution.
Unbelievable yet entirely believable in this climate of sheer hate of trans people. This has to be overturned but it may take time. I would imagine other red states will try and follow suit. I never knew this country had so many ignorant, hateful people regarding trans issues. But we must remain hopeful for the long term.
No sh*t! I'll be moving back to the US soon as an openly queer and trans Anglican priest which I expect will offend certain people. It's hard not to feel some nostalgia for those long-ago days when we were largely invisible.
Indeed. Invisibility suited us well yet we couldn't be contained. I am just flummoxed by this legislation etc. It was good to be able to be more open but I guess a backlash was inevitable. STILL - OMG.
Anyway, congrats on becoming a queer/trans Anglican priest. You are needed and necessary. God(dess) bless!
This is the same zealot AG who just filed an amicus brief on ‘protecting the unborn’. This language is not even in the realms of scientific; but you will see it everywhere; they just stood it up in the abortion pill (mifepristone) ruling. He’s part of the political apparatus funded to erode trans and reproductive rights plus make sure everyone is locked and loaded.
I'm autistic (a proportionally higher percentage of trans folks are) and transitioned nearly 30 years ago. Does this means I'd lose access to testosterone if I were living in MO?! They truly want to eliminate us. I'm bracing myself for when they go for a religious exception for ALL medical care for trans people. Thanks for your reporting, Erin! Make sure to take good care of yourself: this stuff is toxic to read and report on!
That was one of my first questions, too. I have a friend in MO who has been on T for 20 years. Supposedly this EO has some carveouts for people being grandfathered in.... but even if it does, those will likely be eliminated, too.
How do they plan to treat those assigned male at birth who have low testosterone levels and need HRT? Mandatory chromosome testing? Considering chromosomal variance, some people might be in for a surprise. The people writing these orders and laws know next to nothing about sex, gender, human biology, psychology, or frankly, a wide range of subjects! That they're elected or appointed to any office in the first place says a lot about the decline of the American educational and political systems.
It doesn't really help anything, but there is a carve-out for a list of intersex conditions and things like PCOS and precocious puberty in the EO, which is almost certain to get very messy very quickly, and isn't the point after all.
Now I’m nervous AF that Miyares is going to try this in Virginia; the republicans tried to pass some restrictions on us earlier this year but the democrats still (barely) hold the senate, so autocratic BS like this is the only path they currently have here. No doubt that shitbag Youngkin would love it.
Three year waiting period? For gun ownership, too, right?
Oh, no, you mean white cis men shall wait 3 years to receive viagra, and must resolve any depression or anxiety first before receiving that rx? Viagra is not a life saving medication... I certainly hope insurance (govt funded or otherwise) does not cover such a thing!
<<sarcasm>>
None of this is a laughing matter. Humanity continues to slip away from our grasp
And SCOTUS once held some hint of protection... but that was stripped from us, too.
Since 2016, it feels like we're all living in a real life Onion article. :(
I'm disgusted by so much of this... frightened for my children's futures. This isn't the world in which I planned to raise them.
And half the country continues to vote for these lunatics to run the government... they continually vote against their own best interests... it is mind bloggling, to say the least.
Do we have to fear contagion from this gross AG? I'm sure so many other AG's salivated at this news.
Another sad day.
And Erin, hello from Montana (another blood-red state that lost its way).
That's awful! I hope it gets challenged and reversed quickly. I also hope Texas doesn't try something similar. I feel so bad right now for our sisters and brothers in Misery! 😥
ACLU should challenge this immediately he has no real authority to do this
I anticipate they will. This is the most brazen assault yet.

For example; the passing of the bill last week to impose the death penalty for LGBQT Ugandans. All American backed. :-(
Yes, these anti lgbtq policies absolutely funnel similar and often harsher laws overseas and are often funded by the same organizations
I’ve been stockpiling my son’s T for this reason!! Missouri is insane and is breaking my heart. We cannot wait to get out of here. 😭
I am a parent of an awesome transgender son as well. My heart breaks for your family because you have to go through these fascist times in your state. Stay strong and keep fighting for your son.
Thanks! and ALWAYS! :)

The party of “small government” - small enough to slip into your doctor’s office and your womb.
How the hell is this legal??? Lambda Legal and the ACLU need to challenge this immediately. These "lawmakers" should burn in whatever hell they imagine.
It isn't. This is the future though. They're going to keep pushing until they end trans people.

Okay so you can't even be an autistic trans person, this is amazing. I guess I on know what Iowa's legislature is thinking right now
Get your black market HRT ordered ASAP if you don't have a couple years supply already...
or get your doctor to call their prescription into a kansas or illinois pharamacy, esp if you're on injectables and can get the higher concentration solution.

Hey, Max! Hi!
HI there! Nice to see you here. Crazy times eh?

This platform needs other options like rage and grief
