“While my opponent obsesses over my gender and uses cowardly tricks to try to avoid facing me, I will continue to fight for practical solutions to problems that actually impact our communities.”
And her Democrat Primary challenger who tried to get her thrown off the ballot owing to her not using her deadname -- he's too evil and incompetent to be considered for dogcatcher. After all, she used her legal name just as she should.
But it would be interesting to know which party regulars were in sympathy to him, or, to her.
I find it difficult to believe he did this without consulting others in the party.
Well, if "centrist" Dems were looking for a referendum on whether or not they can gain political advantage by chucking trans folks under the bus... here it is: a transphobe, running an explicitly transphobic campaign, against a literal trans person. Surely, we can now expect that every political analyst who's been blaming our existence for the loss in 2024 will sit down, shut the fuck up, and eat a slice of humble pie if Ms. Whaley wins her primary?
(I know, I know- I won't be holding my breath for it.)
Fingers crossed that Frankie-boy gets the boot up the ass he so richly deserves, and bounces down every last step on his trajectory towards the curb.
Again, a transgender candidate—Joanna Whaley—is being targeted by a political opponent who thinks bigotry will win votes. It won’t.
Voters are tired of distraction and division.
Instead of attacking Joanna for who she is, Frank Liberati should be focused on real issues—like fixing Michigan’s voter ID laws that make it harder for people across the board to participate in our democracy.
This kind of tactic isn’t leadership—it’s a failure to address what actually matters.
Outstanding! Voters love people who fight back. They stand behind underdogs. I remember when Danica Roem was first elected, her opponent characterized himself as Virginia's chief transphobe. That messaging didn't appeal to voters. Instead, they wanted the candidate who wanted to make life better for her community, despite attacks from the chief transphobe. I'm sure history will repeat itself here. Congratulations in advance for your electoral victory, Representative Whaley!
Joanna represents the kind of character we need more of and sadly lack in the present administration. Hopefully voters in her community can enjoy her leadership and problem-solving skills by seeing through her opponent's cowardice and fallacies.
As a fan of Count Binface, I'm appalled by the fact that Michigan requires candidates to run under their legal name. Obviously every candidate should use the name that voters know them by, whether it is their legal name or not. Anything else is blatantly undemocratic because it means voters might not recognize their candidate on the ballot.
I went digging and it seems that you need to write to the Wayne County Election Commission and specifically request the filing in order to read it. I suspect they might only release it to folks in Wayne County, MI (and I didn't dig far enough to see whether there's a fee involved).

Thank you Baum.

WOW - Amazing show of courage. Can they bring that same game to the Senate Primary and show up for Abdul El-Sayed??? I guess we'll see.

How can we donate to Ms.Whaley’s campaign?

Liberati needs to be censured by the Michigan Democratic Party. This type of behavior must not be tolerated.
I have seen numerous stories on this. Can anyone actually link the complaint that was filed by Liberati? No article I have seen does this.
