I spend the summer in Maine and have met Mills several times. She is a true ally of our community. I wish that I could vote for her or for Platner because Collins has got to go.
Such good news! This is maybe a bellwether for the country. I think Repubs have overplayed this ploy and their timing is off given all the other crap going on. We have a similar disgusting initiative, underwritten by an ultra rich person, in WA state and I don’t think it has a hope of passing, at least in majority Dem areas. Need to keep a close watch in any case. Primaya Jayapal, one of our Reps in the House, has a trans kid and is passionate about defending the community so that’s a big advantage. She is well regarded by most in the state.
Collins is a conservative Catholic. Obviously her orthodox religion comes first, before any sense of compassion, justice, bodily autonomy and civil rights for all. That church will eventually abuse, demean, and destroy us all if we let it. We're all in this together. Thank you for the reporting.
Recent reporting confirms that a citizen-initiated referendum concerning transgender students has qualified to move forward in Maine and is expected to appear before voters after legislative review.
The proposal would require schools to designate sports teams and certain facilities based on a student’s sex assigned at birth, limiting transgender students’ participation consistent with their gender identity.
The initiative is part of a broader national trend in which advocacy groups have pursued ballot measures addressing transgender participation in school athletics and related policies.
Governor Janet Mills has publicly opposed the pending referendum.
She stated she would not support a ballot measure targeting transgender students, describing such proposals as harmful to children and politically motivated.
Mills has previously supported LGBTQ+ protections and policies allowing transgender athletes to participate consistent with their gender identity under Maine law.
Maine officials, including state leaders responsible for enforcing civil rights law, have continued to uphold protections under the Maine Human Rights Act, which includes gender identity protections in education and athletics.
Governor Janet Mills has publicly stated opposition to policies she believes single out transgender youth.
She has emphasized protecting student well-being and maintaining existing civil rights protections.
Her administration has defended current state policies allowing participation consistent with gender identity
Maine currently includes gender identity protections under state civil rights law.
I fully support Governor Mills for her support of the trans gender community and hope that the people of Maine will Vote against this referendum
Could it be Democrats are finally realizing that trans rights are a winning issue? I hope it's not too late, because it's certainly been too little. I'm grateful for the few who never turned on us, like Gov. Mills. They are what the rest of the party 𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 to be.
Janet has been so good on trans issues but I don’t like that she’s running against a more left populist.
that is gonna divide and conquer and end up getting Susan Collins in there again. this is the history of Maine the DNC get someone else to run whenever there is a popular candidate on the left.
However Janet Mills is a known quantity whereas Graham Platner is a newcomer. He also has the small issue of having that Nazi Totenkopf tattoo on his body, which he claim he got because it "looked cool" and didn't understand the significance AT THE TIME. Yet now that he knows that it was literally the Nazi "Death's Head" badge he still refused to get it removed.
I also want to point out the example of John Fetterman who looked, walked, talked, and acted like a Progressive before he got elected to the Senate. And we all know what happened next.
BOTH Maine Dem candidates pro trans.
THIS is how it should be everywhere.
Civil rights are not negotiable🌹
Yes!! Thank you, I was about to check Platner on this.
Thanks, Erin, for this report.

Good to see a Democrat showing spine.

I like this woman very much! I so hope that she becomes Maine's next senator.
Oh, I needed this bit of light this morning. Thanks, always, Erin for your up to date reporting.
We need more of this to happen, especially in red states.
Thank you Erin. Gooooooo Janet!!
Gotta give 'em some love when they do right. Good to see they are both right.

"with the goal of unseating Republican Senator Susan Collins."
And I hope she does so easily.
