Representative Concannon, a Republican Representative, voted to sustain a veto of a gender affirming care ban in Kansas. Her vote, and others, signal a potential turning point among Republicans.
The coalition of trans people, groups and organizations, plus the public calling is exactly what has to happen in every state. Thank you Kansas for your hard work.
I believe the only turning point for them is the election. If after November they keep voting this way then I might start to believe it, otherwise I'm not holding my breath.
Congratulations, Rep. Concannon, on doing the absolute bare minimum to protect your trans constituents, after toying with their health and their lives for months on end because you thought you could feed them to the wolves and be applauded for it.
No, seriously, thanks for pressing the undo button on your terrible decision... but next time maybe do your fucking homework and exercise a little bit of empathy 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 voting to strip an entire demographic of their basic human rights? I know, I know- crazy idea.
This is good news, especially coming out of a ruby red state that has featured very little good news until now. However, it should be kept in mind that the Kansas GOP still has a supermajority and that the override failure vote was quite narrow. Anti-trans zealots can, and probably will, regroup and try to override again at some point. The intensity of the legislative attacks against trans people has been too much for me to ever believe that the right-wing zealots are easing up now.
I knew there were republicans with a backbone and this proves that people with a conscience can see that government over reach is destroying young people's lives and ultimately their futures.
The ”less government” argument is the winning one on this issue. This is the uniter, the one that brings liberals and conservatives together. It is also the winning pro-choice argument. Acceptance is another matter, but that is something that takes time. The needle has moved on this over the decades… again, slowly. It is hard to see with all the flame-throwing politicians firing up the haters.
Which leads me to the allies. I grew up with fundamentalist Christian schooling, but my parents are Union Democrats. Big labor, auto workers. They were not evangelicals like the zealots at my school. For them - the policy was people could do what they wanted. Not our business. And so, they voted for equal rights, though that was not their primary issue.
For me, it was foremost equal rights for women. I used my own logic in extension to broader human rights. For acceptance, science was the key for me. Facts. Both of these took time. But because my inner compass has been true, my vote has followed. This has nothing to do with liberal/conservative or political party. It is about right and wrong. It is right in this country to say that everyone should enjoy the same rights. It is wrong to say otherwise.
Republicans don't really give a shit about any of these issues except for their use as a political weapon. Now that they're starting to come off like diseased and mentally deranged perverts by obsessively focusing on them they're trying to step back. All of them need to be voted out.
Good deal, but I don't trust any of them. They could be paying attention to how they'll fair during the elections, then turn up the heat again. Maybe that will be enough time for the trans side to become proactive, though I doubt it. One State does something, other States follow and it's like a high-stakes game of ... what's that game where heads pop up and you have to smash them? I must be getting old; I can't remember games I played at fairs & amusement parks (hahahaha).

"Her vote, and others, signal a potential turning point among Republicans." <-- Hopefully!
I should add #Omelas
We'll TAKE the victory!
