Props to John Oliver for still being a staunch defender of the community through everything. Its heartening to see him not back down and instead continue to debunk and push back against the transphobic myths and lies his mainstream audience encounter elsewhere.

I hate Bari Weiss so much. She is the ultimate example of someone born on third base and thought she hit a triple. Her reputation as a "heterodox" intellectual is a lie on both counts - she neither intellectualizes in any meaningful sense, nor are her thoughts particularly "heterodox". She has, for her entire career, donned the attire of the brave outsider, all the while enjoying the benefits of being an elite insider with remarkable access to power.

My dream would be to be able to tell her these things, nicely and politely, to her face. Ideally in court.

Once again we must be on the lookout for morons with little accurate information of which they speak. I am glad that Oliver has had the courage to speak out and defend the Trans community and hope that he and others will not back down from bullies or corporate organizations who try to restrict or curb free speech and truth. We should continue to support Oliver and the others who have the strength and balls to speak out

Wow, this really seems like a case of someone constantly falling up the corporate ladder.

That's exactly what it is. She masquerades as "independent" and "heterodox" while deploying standard-fare conservative ideas. Whenever her low-quality journalism has faced justified pushback, she has turned herself into a martyr of "cancel culture". She is Rush Limbaugh with a better wardrobe (only just barely).

I foresee a time when we will need to return to the pre-Internet world of locally hosted, dial up, bulletin board services. Why? They were not beholden to corporate media or government interference. You also didn't need a license to run them. Oldsters like me will remember sites like The Well, out of the bay area, or WitchVox (which I believe, in it's Internet incarnation, recently died). With the increasing consolidation of media outlets, it will be even more important for us to find old-school ways of communicating, staying in touch, collaborating, and supporting each other.

John Oliver’s show about this, as you mentioned, was fire. You could see his rage. Feel his rage! It was excellent.

Oliver's show is well worth the watch for its historical context setting and clear examples of Weiss' biases, to say nothing of her personality. I hadn't seen her much until his numerous clips in this video...OMG she sure seems full of herself. So sorry for the news folks at CBS who will need to suffer under her pomposity. She is full of big words but mostly hot air IMO.

Indeed!

Every time the "gender critical" are confronted by measured facts, they fall apart like a house of cards.

Because there is no credible basis for their views at al, is a big part of why the people engineering, funding, and carrying out the propaganda campaign and enacting the laws and policies against transgender people must face 42 U.S.C. § 1983, 18 U.S.C. § 241, & 18 U.S.C. § 242 prosecution.

They have no excuse. They are malicious child abusers who want to force some boys to have and grow up with breasts and periods, and, to force some girls to have and grow up with beards and deep voices. They are the monster they claim they fight.

I think you mean Warner Brothers in the last paragraph, instead of the second Paramount. Great article otherwise

Very good reporting by John Oliver and his staff as usual. Weiss’s victimhood behavior is classic neocon stance. She’s really good at grabbing attention and it seems pretty transparent that getting attention is her main fuel. Like our current prez, when people don’t pay attention she

withers.

I worked at WUSTL when Jamie Reed was there. Reed is the reason why I decided not to have anything to do with the employee resource group OutMed. Reed was the committee lead for Pride. Some context; there was a great deal of turmoil after what the police had done and been doing to transgender people, especially Trans people of color, including the killing of Kiwi Herring. During a May meeting the cisgender OutMed majority, almost all cis White men, couldn't understand why in a discussion of which type of rainbow keychains, T-shirts, and pins the WUSTL booth at Pride St. Louis 2019 should be giving away, I asked if it was perhaps too early to determine that, and instead, we should question if it was appropriate to EVEN BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE with the police insisting they march in the parade with uniforms, weapons, armored personnel carriers, and all. The same police who victimize Trans people and ignore us when we're attacked. A rancorous debate broke out in which I was openly vilified and insulted and my identity as a Trans person and woman kicked about and belittled.

And no action was taken except the one previously delineated by Reed. It was as if I hadn't bothered to speak.

Reed at the time identified as genderqueer and used she/they pronouns and their spouse at the time was a Trans man, who has since detransitioned, supposedly in order to improve their marriage, and coincidentally, not embarrass Reed in their new career of anti-Trans evangelization.

All I ever saw from Reed was confrontation and negativity. At first I thought these were different traits for different motivations, such as determination, a willingness to fight for the best course of action, and I even said so. But I quickly saw I had been hasty and mistaken. All that was there was confrontationalism, a desire to dominate any setting, and a desire to seek personal aggrandization. No there, there. I was horrified and realized I didn't need to be a part of this group.

And then not too much later came the implosion at Children's after Weiss published the Reed screed.

What an appalling concatenation of inaccuracy, untruths, and misinformation.

I knew many of those parents and if there was any complaint to be heard, it was frustration with the length of time it took to navigate the process and best practices in order to begin blockers. My direct experience here is the exact opposite of Reed's claims, the Missouri legislature's, and the Attorney General of Missouri at the time, Andrew Bailey, an open transphobe and now #2 at the DOJ. He is an ambitious man and our corpses are a convenient stepping stone. The supposed GOPMAGA idea that the clinic was willy nilly handing out Lupron and GAHT to all takers without oversight or caution is absolutely not the truth. And since then, most parent and family support groups for gender expansive youth in the St. Louis area have shut down or gone underground, from threats of legal action and investigation to threats of violence, murder, and terrorism, which the authorities have ignored. As usual.

Reed destroyed so much for so many, but hey, making money is the most important American value, amirite?

The Washington University Children's Transgender Center for Excellence followed to the best of my knowledge the best practices of WPATH and the satisfaction rate as far as I can ascertain was in the 90th percentile. That's better than most if not all patient satisfaction rates for gender affirming care experienced by cisgender people! Should cis het folk no longer have access to HRT, pelvic floor reconstruction, prostate care, erectile dysfunction treatment, breast reduction, breast enhancement, laser hair removal, electrolysis, hair regrowth therapy, sexuality counseling, labiaplsty, vaginal contouring, hysterectomies, facial feminization, facelifts, neck tucks, ear pinning, gynecomastia care?

Because if that threshold is insufficient to temporarily press pause on adolescent secondary sex characteristic development for a very tiny number of people diagnosed according to stringent diagnostic protocols for gender dysphoria and or differences of sexual development, then SURELY as a society we should accept no less a bar for treatment for the vast majority of our citizens!

No more progesterone peri/post menopausal HRT! No more boner pills! No more prostate care, if it's the size of a bowling ball and your pants look like you're wearing a diaper, tough nuggs, If pushing rope is God's will, then get used to it! Isn't that what cisgender people tell US, all the damned TIME?

Reed has unleashed a whirlwind, and what has been sown, will be reaped. I believe a most bitter harvest is coming, a bumper crop, with despair and spite enough for EVERYONE.

If you'd told me 20 years ago that The Daily Show was going to be a training course for some of the best journalists of our time, I wouldn't have believed it, but... here we are. Out of all of them, I'd give John Oliver top honors. He's turned out some truly great investigative pieces, and been a reliable ally besides.
