Reading the reported incidents, I'm just like, these people are so fucking evil. They know what they are doing, they are doing it with the intent to hurt and abuse, and they are going on a power trip while doing it.

I hope A.H. and others stay strong, but good god, no one should have to live through that.

What's the saying... no hate like christian love.

And these people wonder why kids want nothing to do with their stupid religion

The important thing is to stay focused on our right to freedom of expression. They have to continuously stir against us. All we must do is be ourselves, ardently.

This trans panic stuff has reached the absolute madness stage. What the hell is a “biological sex” dress code anyway in 2024? Are these people fashion consultants or supposed educators? These types all like to wave the Bible around. When God created Adam and Eve he let them walk around naked. After they ate from the Tree of Knowledge it was they not God who put leaves on. They picked them off trees. They didn’t buy them at the men’s and women’s departments at Target. It’s all nonsense. Just an excuse for bullying and bigotry.

Like the great philosopher Ru Paul has said, we’re all born naked and the rest is drag. And that applies to EVERYONE.

All clothing is gender neutral if you aren’t a little bitch about it.

Coming out and transitioning as a fully independent adult with a supportive spouse in a deeply blue area was terrifying enough.

I can't begin to imagine how hard it is being a teen, living in a hostile environment, and presenting other than cis. A.H and people like her have an incredible strength and willpower. I hope she gets some amount of justice out of this and not just more harassment.

How rotten can people be? To treat other people, especially young people like that is absolutely disgusting. I will resist expressing ill will towards them. May they someday make amends for the harm they are inflicting on others. May they find the ability to feel love rather than hate. May they find the ability to build others up rather than tear them down. I won't hold my breath.

I'll do it for you.

May they get hit by a bus like Regina George, or hopefully get theirs one way or another.

They won't, lol

This isn't just about trans kids. It's not even about religion. It's about power.

It's about maintaining a patriarchal and racial hierarchy that puts able Christian straight white men (cis white men, of course; trans men don't exist) on top, gives white women a privileged but subservient place next to white men, and devalues everyone else according to how much they diverge.

ALL OF THIS!!!

Thank you, Erin, for reporting this. Of course hearing about these kids getting this abuse hurts so deeply. Will we ever get past this? I hope so, but I don't think so. As Ellen said above, stay focused on freedom of expression; our right to be seen and heard that is authentic to ourselves.

I am weeping as I read this at work. The joy of being able "work" (as my true self) here compared to all the abuse that is happening the others like me is a hard contrast. I get to spend my days hanging out with adults with disabilities and my colleagues here in a blue state. A more accepting group of people would be hard to find. I send the joy and love that I experience to those in hard hard places. You are loved and supported from far away.

Thank you to the teachers who stood up for A.H. SHAME on the teachers/administrators who did not.

This was the reply to a comment I posted elsewhere on Substack: "I certainly don’t have a gender identity. Why should I? I’m a man (i.e I have a penis) and I know it." This is the level of ignorance that's out there. And folks like this think they know what they're talking about.

The fact that these people managed to treat this child so horribly and then went to their churches and patted themselves on the back makes it hard to believe there's any justice at all. Doubtful that the teachers or the principal will ever face any real consequences.

Pretty soon girls won't be allowed to wear pants at all!

Expand full comment

If we let girls wear pants, they might get thoughts in their pretty little heads. They might imagine they can work, taking jobs away from hard-working white men. They might imagine they can control their own bodies instead of being barefoot and pregnant all the time. They might imagine that they're fully human. We can't have that.

Listen, I suffered from kindergarten to 6th grade having to wear skirts/dresses. When 7th grade came along and there was no dress code, I think I threw all my girl clothes in the trash, never to be seen again (hahahaha).

I'm no feminist, because there is a difference between men & women, female feminists don't do truly manly jobs in this country (for the most part), but these kinds of things are about power/control at all costs. Those folks need to get a life and leave people alone. I wish they could see our comments, because we're merely complaining to each other.

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, but welcome to being treated like Black people. I think they're getting off doing these things, since they can't do as much shit to us as they used to. They do still pick on our hair, though. So, now pick on a group of people who have flimsy laws protecting them. Uh huh. This is disgusting.

No wonder American wars teach Americans geography. Schools are busy teaching bullying, transhate, and patriarchy

Bullying tendencies often arise in families, in someone’s upbringing. It is the responsibility of parents, teachers, and other authority figures to instill compassion and empathy in our youth, from a very early age. Our society is failing miserably at that, and that’s why this is such a problem. I feel deep sadness for those affected. Part of me wishes they could be rescued from Mississippi, and part of me would like to see them transferred to a caring and accepting school - they do exist.

Expand full comment

As I was reading about this situation, I also hoped they could be rescued from Mississippi. But I was also reminded of the civil rights fight to desegregate schools and this feels eerily similar. These kids (and adults) fighting for gender rights are HEROES! They are strong and they will foster change in Mississippi and hopefully, throughout the world! Thank you for telling their stories, Erin!
