Congratulations to the people of Hungary for all the hard work and sacrifice that made this possible! None of this would have happened without the organizing and incredible efforts that went into getting Orban out. I hope we in the US can get inspired to do the same!
But seriously I hope Orban losing is the beginning of the end of brain-dead social conservative nativism that has been sweeping "the West" lately.
How soon before the tide goes out from under the SoCons in the UK? . . .

It is so difficult to overstate the importance of the mid-terms here. There must be enough of a bloodbath for the GOP they eject the SoCons, and leave whom of them remains chastised and quiet.
Viktor Orbán spent years attacking the LGBTQ community, stripping away rights and using fear and division as political weapons. Donald Trump has followed a similar path, doing everything he can to undermine LGBTQ Americans, particularly transgender people, through executive actions, federal policies, and relentless political attacks.
Hungary is now beginning to move away from some of Orbán's discriminatory policies as political change and European Union human rights obligations exert pressure for reform. Unfortunately, the United States does not have the protections of the EU framework. What we do have is the power of our vote.
Elections matter. If we want a country that respects equality, dignity, and freedom for all people, we must elect leaders who will defend civil rights rather than attack them. I remain hopeful that the upcoming elections will move our nation toward greater inclusion, fairness, and justice for every American.
I am absolutely thrilled that Orban is out of office, but the unfortunate thing is, even though you remove a fascist dictator from office, it doesn't mean the same sentiment doesn't still exist amongst a sizable amount of the population. Out of a population of 9.6 million people, there were still 2.5 million people that voted for Orban and his party. The societal damage done across multiple decades will take generations to fix.
Huge kudos to Mayor Karacsony, for holding the line until he no longer had to! I hope he gets to take a well-deserved victory lap now that he no longer has the Sword of Damocles hanging over him... and that Orban is somewhere impotently stewing in the knowledge that he no longer has the power to do the slightest damned thing about it.
