The situation continues to deteriorate when it comes to transgender youth care. For adults, we see Kansas as the newest state added to a "Do Not Travel" advisory list.
GA has a bill moving that will bar the State Health Benefit Plan from covering gender affirming care to trans people at all ages. HB54. It was gutted by the senate and rewritten to be what it now is. This is despite trans people winning coverage at the State Supreme Court in 2023.
On GA, I have to listen to this garbage too. Rick Jackson, the Rethuglican front runner wants to throw anybody in jail that does trans surgeries calling it genital mutilation. What hypocrites they already condone genital mutilation on intersex babies. I know for a fact that a carve out to mutilate intersex babies genitals is in the bill that Brian Kemp signed. I wish democrats would call them out on this hypocrisy. He is not getting my vote.
Thank you for this critical work. It is heartbreaking seeing the map for risk to trans youth. And very motivating to keep up the good fight because while it sucks being a trans adult, at least we often have more influence to apply (not ignoring the many great student movements).
Thanking you for compiling this list is necessary, lifesaving but not at all what I want to thank you for. This is f-ing horrific. I live in MA and am sending love and solidarity to all my trans siblings in states that are being brutally cruel. We are sacred. We are the ones who truly understand what freedom is.
Have been singing the West Side Story “I wanna go to America,” since 1972. Now, not so sure. Do not fancy the round trip on the same day. Thanks for all this information.
Bless you for going through all of the legislated hate so that we don’t have to read the full shitstorm. But oh please Erin I hope you are taking good care of yourself and protecting your mental health from this onslaught. My heart is with you and your care for our precious community.
Your recap of the best and worst states for the transgender community should be a wake-up call for anyone who has not been paying attention.
The disparities are not abstract — they are real laws, real policies, and real consequences affecting real people’s safety, health care, employment, housing, and basic dignity.
It is imperative that we keep this issue front and center.
Silence enables regression.
Complacency allows rights to be stripped away state by state. Across the country, coordinated efforts driven by religious extremism, partisan politics, and the influence of figures like Donald Trump have targeted transgender Americans as a political wedge.
These campaigns are not about protecting anyone — they are about control, exclusion, and mobilizing fear.
Weaponizing faith to justify discrimination is a betrayal of the very moral teachings many claim to defend.
If one invokes religion, then one should live by its core principles: compassion, justice, humility, and love for one’s neighbor — not cruelty or exclusion.
The transgender community deserves the same constitutional protections as every other American: equal protection under the law, bodily autonomy, freedom from government intrusion, and the right to live openly and safely.
This is not a fringe issue. It is a civil rights issue.
We must continue to speak out, organize, vote, litigate, support affirming institutions, and demand accountability from elected officials — at every level of government.
History has shown that progress only endures when people refuse to look away.
Even the best states are failing take NY many of the hospitals and clinics are starting to bend the knee take NYU Langone who yesterday bent the knee to the trump administration and stoped serving the trans community being afraid of funding cuts.
These hospitals, clinics, etc must have the balls to stand up to trump - take him to court and show him and its patients that they will not stand for this
I wasn't ready to see the whole youth map just flip red like that. What a gut punch. I can't even imagine what parents and kids reading this must be feeling right now. Take care of yourselves, everyone. Hang on as tightly as you can, for as long as you can. Even if you don't have the energy or bandwidth to march or network, even if you have to run or hide, always remember this: 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦.
Real deal, how do you keep your mental health in good places reading all that hate!?

Seeing the entire youth map red is heartbreaking, but entirely appropriate. This is a crisis!
I’m actually surprised there aren’t more “do not travel” states.

How can you keep your sanity while researching this? I'm cis, and it makes me ache! Thank you for all that you do. You are truly a saint!
