Anti-trans group, 1 Million March 4 Children, planned massive protests against the rights of trans students. They were largely drowned out by huge crowds of supporters for trans rights and unions.
Thank you so much for this reporting. I am glad I get to support your work. I cannot tell you how much it means to me to know that you are doing this work and keeping me informed. And to see this response in Canada is completely encouraging.
Also, you expose the collusion between the far right and the anti-trans sentiment over and over again. Critical!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
This is great news and gives me hope that Canada will remain a safe place for trans people. On a more speculative note, I hope that Canada would be willing to offer trans Americans asylum if things here ever get really bad on a national level.
"encircled and trapped” by “a massive crowd of counter-protesters.”
I hope he and every one of his hate mongering counterparts remembers that fear. Spreading hate should never feel like it will could be done without fear of exposure and ridicule. Being exposed and ridiculed is pretty light fare for what these cowards are doing.
Wonderful reporting as always, and reading about the outflowing of support across Canada brought a few happy tears to this trans person's eyes. I wish as many people here in the US were as aware of this plight and would rise up in similar counterprotests to take on these ghouls. Still, I'll take some good news when I see it, so thank you for this.
The fight goes on! But I am so proud of my Canadian Roots. I am a 69 year old Trans Woman who only chose to transition a couple years ago because I thought we had turned a corner...and we have as it relates to the 50's, 60's, and 70's when the climate for people like me to be our true selves was unsafe.
1. Guns in the US allow groups like the Proud Boys to terrorize people.
2. Canada has a strong labor movement that many not even the most union-friendly cities in the US can match.
3. Canada's closest approximation to the South is Alberta (which is like their Texas) and Saskatchewan, which is like a reverse Vermont (Saskatchewan used to be socialist but now it's conservative (Canada's first single-payer healthcare system stared in Saskatchewan); Vermont used to be a die-hard red state but now it's a deep blue state). That being said, even Alberta is more progressive than Texas, as Alberta once voted for the NDP in the last 10 years in its provincial parliament (The NDP is to the left of the Liberal Party, to which PM Justin Trudeau belongs).
4. EDIT: Almost forgot, but this may be the most important: Rupert Murdoch does not have a presence in Canada, and Canada doesn't want to be like the US despite being the country in the world most like the US.
That's all I can think of. If there are any Canadians here who want to correct me for any misinformation, feel free!
In St. John’s it was 200:100 for the “no space for hate” side, and as we’ve seen across the country, we’ve had strong support from teachers, with the president of the provincial teachers union there with us.
To be fair, not all counter-protests in the US have to come in the form of physically showing up; The transmisic hate group Gays Against Groomers was having a fundraiser here in NYC, and there was a financial counter-protest on https://www.outfundraisehate.com where you could donate money per attendee to New Alternatives, which is a charity for homeless LGBTQ+ youth. The counter-fundraiser was a smashing success, as $11K was raised for the charity.
I wonder what happened in Halifax; I'll try to find out. I'm originally from Canada and it just sickens me how the poison here in the US is seeping across the border.

Way to go Canada!
I was thinking: that’s exactly how transgender children are feeling in the US: ENCIRCLED & TRAPPED.
It's really uplifting to see so many people turn out to ACTUALLY protect children.
This is so beautiful, but a good reminder to keep showing up.
This gives me hope. Thank you for reporting on this Erin!
I was hoping Canada wouldn’t get infected by this American-style hate but I’m so glad to see the counter-protesters showed up
We need something similar in the US every day until discriminatory laws are repealed

Yes! So great to hear some good news for a change. If only we could do this in the U.S.
The fight goes on! But I am so proud of my Canadian Roots. The big question remains. Why is the US not reacting the same as Canada to these hateful and discriminating laws?
Some speculation:
1. Guns in the US allow groups like the Proud Boys to terrorize people.
2. Canada has a strong labor movement that many not even the most union-friendly cities in the US can match.

It’s sad that hateful ideologies imported from the US have any footing in Canada, but I’m buoyed by the fervent responses seen across the country

Ok I'm back. There were protests and counterprotests in Nova Scotia. The CBC says that in Sydney, counterprotestors outnumbered protestors 2 to 1.
This is heartening in at least one city in New Brunswick:

.............And meanwhile in the USA: CRICKETS. 🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗
Maybe cold air gets brain cells to think clearer (although not everywhere obviously).
