A recent article from Jesse Singal in the New York Times seemed to indicate the organization might be quietly retreating from supporting trans youth care.
Erin, thank you for covering this, and speaking as a trans-allied member of APA I am proud of this outcome. While not wanting to inflict on the unwilling too much of a description of how sausages are made, I do want to expand on this story to note the tireless efforts of certain members, Divisions, and certain Sections in the APA, such as Section 9 of Div 39, Psychoanalysis For Social Responsibility; as well as many other individuals and groups who have had to persist and resist the attempt to reframe the discussion in terms of trans folks right to exist and exist without being pathologized. All of our colleagues have not gotten on board, and this is not settled in the minds of some at APA.
Of course this has often been spearheaded by trans and nonbinary colleagues, but fortunately some of the work is being shifted yearly to cis mental health professionals and we are seeing progress. The amount of unfortunately necessary discourse around this makes it clear that we are getting better, but are not there yet.
Please rest assured, though, that those of us who who watch for signs of internal hesitancy and equivocation, will continue to "make good trouble" within APA and be full-throated in our support of trans youth, who remain subjected to authoritarianism disguised as "care" far too often. Onwards!
Your organization, or some hierarchs in it, will be offered no few baubles of one sort or another to become advocates for being transgender to be defined again as a mental illness only of adults. Certainly there are those I believe among you might effect such of they could for free.
Should not the likes of McHugh, Zucker, Bailey, et all, be expelled and it be militated for that their licensure be revoked?
And yet I guarantee you that the vast majority of NYT readers who see that crap won't see the APA's rebuttal. I guess this is what passes for journalism these days.
Erin - I continue to be so grateful for your reporting. I’m very close to cancelling my NYT subscription for their continued anti-trans bias, not to mention their anemic reporting on Trump and continued bending of the knee to anti democracy right wing thugs. As the mother of 2 transgender kids - now in their mid to late twenties - I can only hope and pray that our medical institutions continue to provide life saving care to trans people and that professional associations like the APA hold the line. It’s terrifying out there for the LGBTQ community and my heart aches over the ignorance and hatred that my children and all trans folks are enduring.
Yes trans youth are depressed and suffer from anxiety because of all the hate that this administration is promoting. What a bunch of BS from the times.
Singal lies. His lies are part and parcel of an open conspiracy to hurt transgender people including children.
The people engineering, funding, and carrying out the propaganda campaign and enacting the laws and policies against transgender people must face 42 U.S.C. § 1983, 18 U.S.C. § 241, & 18 U.S.C. § 242.
Could they voice louder they reprobation against the NYT trashy paper from singal... we hear it from you but not from them in the media... in my opinion they do not really fight hard to protect trans rights...
Thank you for shining a light on this, Erin. Knowing what is true, and who is on the side of Truth and sharing that with the public is essential to protecting the Trans community. A lie seems to spread like measles, - the truth has to go door to door. We all know how to knock - we have you for the information.
The NYT is traveling down the CBS path and it's an astonishment to watch it happen. Trading on their smug "... newspaper of record..." reputation, they increasingly are becoming an outlet for ugly, destructive reportage. Acceding to the trans-hatred seemingly demanded by Don and the MAGAs and far too prevalent among the Corporate Dem, "run to the [non-existent] Middle) caste, they are recapitulating the virulent and murderous biases that pretty much describe their coverage of the Genocide. Trump's complaints about them are all for show. The Times is all too glad to chop wood and carry water for him and his gang of bigots.
American Psychiatric Association remains supportive as well. The professional anti-trans groups will grab any bogus misunderstanding and use it to support their arguments.
Thank the Goddess we still have the APA on our side. Even though legislators don't seem to take them seriously.
Facts don’t matter anymore just the cult dogma 🤬🤬

Great summary. Dont hold your breath waiting for the NYT to address the falsehoods Singal was given free license to publish.
Yes trans youth are depressed and suffer from anxiety because of all the hate that this administration is promoting. What a bunch of BS from the times.
That is wonderful news, but we must continue to be very vigilant every day
as to what is printed and espoused in all areas of the media and on-line
We must alwayS BE ALERT
Thank you Erin. I'm very happy to see it.

It needs to become a Dem party plank.

I'm sure the New York Times will follow up with corrections to Signal's font of misinformation any day now. 🙄
I am happy that they are supporting us. The righties need someone to hate and we are the most convenient group for them to hate.
Thanks for this report and for this good news. Let's see if the NY Times allows for an opinion piece in response to Singal.

So glad to hear this news, thank you for reporting it!
