In a troubling new development for transgender people, Senator Manchin appeared to double down on his anti-trans vote to espouse a Project 2025 policy to ban all federal funding for trans care.
Any trans person in the U.S. that is not gripped with a state of deep worry bordering on alarm right now, it must be because they have their head buried in sand.
The coming months and years are going to be very difficult. We got a clue this was coming when half of the states, in quick succession, banned best-practice GAC for minors in clear opposition to the recommendations of multiple medical organizations.
I just composed and send messages based on your article, Erin, to my two senators. Anyone reading this, please feel free to copy and paste to your own senators:
Please insure that the anti-trans provisions restricting transgender care for those in the military, recently added to the National Defense Authorization Act with help from Senator Manchin, are removed before passing the bill. One provision would bar the government from paying for transgender surgeries deemed medically necessary for transgender soldiers, while the other would bar TRICARE, the insurance service for U.S. military service members, from covering any gender-affirming care for those under 18. Both provisions would significantly impact transgender service members and their families, as obtaining care can be difficult for those enrolled in the military without federal support.
See, what we have here is a redneck problem. No way this is a major budget line item. It just part of the attack against the other. It's hatred being cultivated. I does matter who it is against. The smaller percentage of the population, the better. Bullies like to pick on the minority. Less risk.
I'm worried sick about this now, especially if Manchin is able to get a rider on for all government trans care, which would include the health insurance if federal employees like myself. I'm FORTUNATE that it would only affect my HRT needing to be out-of-pocket (and part of it already is, as I've had to take a very low dose of T since my bottom surgery), given that my HRT doc is also my PCP so the quarterly visits would still be covered under the ACA...
I wonder what would happen to Federal employees in states that require health insurance to cover trans care?
Forgot to mention that the cost to replace those in the military who are transgender would run into the tens millions of dollars not to mention that we are/were expensively trained and experienced and the loss would take years to replace particularly given the problems with recruiting people to join. As they say this is "cutting of the nose despite the face"
Manchin is just another bought and paid for politician with few morals. As for the amendments to the bill those Dems who supported voting it out of committee are simply cowards and probably view this as not hurting their chance of re-election given how small a minority we are and with the majority of their constituents at best ambivalent. This Republic is teetering on disaster this election and our ignorant politicians who are unable to think critically or have any courage are fiddling while it starts to burn. The amount of money spent influencing our politicians and the cost of elections is obscene. The blame is all around but especially Scotus which deemed the McCain-Feingold bipartisan bill unconstitutional which would have put into effect some controls and decreased the influence of the moneyed interests. Look at other countries around the world, they spend no where near the billions spent here. Horrifying to say the least.
Exactly what are the Democrat Senators doing? Are they TRAITORS to their own party platform, which calls for all prescribed healthcare must be provided for trans military active duty and Veterans?
Their abandonment of their Democrat platform and willingness to throw Trans military people under the bus, indicates that they haven’t even read their own party platform, or are willing to act like TRAITORS to their platform.
Yep, that's pretty much it. They're spineless cowards with no balls. I'm disgusted with the whole lot of them, but I'm still not willing to vote Red or not vote at all. Our numbers are so few that we've not been able to unite. Too much infighting amongst the veterans, and none with the military because they can't fight back. This is all imploding and I saw it coming.
Big surprise, the hardest shove towards the bus lane came from the most crooked, ass-backwards conservative sonofabitch who doesn't have an (R) after his name. He's leaving the Hill and has nothing left to lose, no career left to torch, so he'll just go right ahead and send himself off with a final fuck you to people who've given as much to this country as he's taken from it- but whose eyes he'll never have to stare into while he justifies himself, because he'll never have to answer for a single thing he's done. That's just not how life works for people like him. He'll sail off into the sunset on his yacht without a care in the world, while ordinary people drown in the chaos he's left in his wake.
What a disgusting, disgraceful excuse for a human being.
We need the names of the senators and which way they voted to hold them accountable . Where is there a list of which way the various senators voted in these measures.
Between the strong likelihood of an incoming GOP administration and Congress, and the SCOTUS decision in 2025, GAC for youth is on life support right now, and I expect it will be essentially unobtainable in virtually all of the country within 1-2 years, and maybe sooner. Parents with a trans child will have no option except seek care out of the country - and that’s assuming that they don’t find a way to make that illegal too.
GAC for adults will be targeted too, and is also highly at risk.
The only remaining question is if blue protective states can and will form a tight sanctuary against hostile federal policies. It will be an uphill battle because federal law normally overrides state law.
Right now, that party is rendered useless and will only split the vote in the WRONG direction. Get real. This isn't a movie; this is reality right here, right now.
A friend pointed out that Heritage Foundation, as a 501(c)(3), is not permitted to take any political stance. Something we have to be very careful about during PFLAG meetings. Maybe the IRS ought to be revoking their tax-exempt status right about now.
Oooooooooo, good point! Someone should alert the IRS. I guess they could say they're not taking on a political stance if they're creating a political stance. That got me thinking...
I am interested in talking with anyone looking at seeking asylum in Canada . I am looking at Toronto area . Pls contact me if you have an interest in exploring this with someone else or others . I think it’s scary enough to move to another country as a retiree with no family so if there are others exploring this I’d be interested in talking with you .

We better start working on DIY, huh 😢
It's looking like that's a real possibility :(

True, but they didn't care about that before, and won't care now. As a veteran, I saw this in 2016 and it's even more ridiculous now.
Manchin is a snake so I'm not that surprised, but it's still disappointing.

Better to fall in a fight for our rights than to die in vain.

Thanks for the alert. I emailed our MA Senator Ed Markey to urge him to block any bill with this rider.
The UNI-PARTY in action.
Vote Green 💚
