Seems like a giant fuck you to trans men imo. How about declaring testosterone is no longer a controlled substance in the state? There's precedent with cannabis, I don't see why we aren't doing that.
Right? As usual, transmen are being left out of consideration, and the article doesn't even mention that fact. Do legislators and the general public know that "transgender" doesn't only refer to transwomen? It doesn't seem so. Erin, please address this issue in one or more of your articles or invite S. Baum and/or another reporter to cover the transmale point of view.
Best state in the Union(doesn’t say much anymore). We’re also close to the Pacific Ocean and Canada if you need to bug out. Hell, most of our Republicans are liberals. We also have mountains and shit.
Please consider clarifying in the title or subtitle that this bill only covers some forms of HRT. Would you use the same wording if the bill excluded feminizing HRT instead of masculinizing HRT?
Yes, but estrogen isn’t. That’s nuts. Fentanyl is also a controlled substance - why is T the same, even though it’s in a different class of scheduled medication? Yeah I know it’s a steroid But transgender men are not on T to gain a greater advantage in some sport or win a medal. Trans masculine men are on T because it saves their lives. It’s an example of one of the few instances in healthcare that neglect men’s health.
They could still press WA Congresspeople to push for the consideration of people who rely on testosterone for their health. Cis men with naturally low T take it, too!
Hey, the second line here isn't right. HB 1971 declares that health PLANS (aka insurers) must provide reimbursement for 12-mo refill, not health care PROVIDERS (physicians, NPs, etc), as stated. Causing confusion for people at my workplace, please update or clarify, thank you.
Very good news for Washington State! Washington, it seems, has always been among the most supportive states for trans people. Wish other blue states would do the same. Washington State will need its protective resolve a lot in the future, as the federal onslaught against trans rights continues.
WA doesn’t fuck around. The governor and the Attorney General and the state legislature are really on the front line of trans rights. They are strengthening the laws already in place to protect 🏳️⚧️ folxs as we speak. And yeah, they’re gonna need that spine because pretty soon we will have to openly defy the 🍊 💩 🤡 and his armed goons.
Yes! Having to refill my son’s T every month is a pain. Especially because sometimes Walgreens just doesn’t have it in stock. Although with a 30 day supplies, he is able to stockpile. And I think that’s going to be necessary
OK, just another reason why Washington is awesome. I am disappointed that it didn’t include testosterone. I don’t really understand why. And I think the article needs to clarify so people understand that this law only applies to state insurance plans, not those governed by ERISA, which is what most people have. Like my family.
I wish they would do the right thing even when it doesn't personally impact them. but, however people get there I guess.
Sounds like Wagoner is directly affected, but 5 other Rs voted for it too!

I was up on Rainer last May. Loved it!
I do miss the mountains. Perhaps I should take a small break in Washington this summer.
Kind of a let down from the title to see that this doesn't apply to testosterone or other controlled substances.
It is sad. Unfortunately T is covered by federal regs.

Ah okay, good to know that part wasn't within their control.

I agree, they absolutely should do that!
Gloomy Gus here again. This bill wasn't about trans people. And trans men don't even get the side benefit of it not actively excluding trans people.
Gus,
That's all true, but the glass is still half full right? i.e. better that the bill passed than it didn't.
True!

Clarified!
Thank you!! Really appreciate all your reporting! :)
Good job Washington! And I'm glad some of the Republicans actually admitted that anti-trans laws cause suffering.
Some good news in this world today. Hope it's not the last.
Thank goodness for sensible Republicans even if it's not necessarily about human rights. Just that they can see through the bs
I agree, I was very surprised to see any GOP voted for it and was very glad to see they did.

When a repuke has a stake in this, THEN, they care. From what Erin shared it would have passed without any GOP, unless some vote count requirement?
I would like 90 day supply be forced as the minimum fill for all prescriptions across the U.S.

OMG!! My state is amazing! 🎉Setting an example for everyone else to follow suit!!
huge precedent
Let’s go Washington state!

Proof positive that Republicans do, in fact, understand the concept of intersectionality...
...they just don't care to apply it until the issue sits in their living room.
