Here we have a moderate Democrat governor in a purple state standing up for the people her party has previously vowed to protect.
I can't help but continue to feel smugly satisfied at Seth Moulton's tremendously stupid miscalculation. Why on earth did he think abandoning us would help him win senate in MASSACHUSSETTS when even the governor of Virginia feels comfortable standing up for us.
I'm a dirty lefty, so I was never a big fan of Spanberger. This definitely puts some points in the integrity column for her, though.
I applaud Virginia Governor Spanberger for recognizing what too many politicians continue to ignore: the transgender community and the broader LGBTQ+ community deserve to be seen, heard, and protected—not treated as disposable political talking points.
Politicians who believe they can ignore this community without consequences are making a serious mistake. While the transgender and LGBTQ+ communities may represent a smaller portion of the population, they have something that politicians cannot afford to dismiss: the support of millions of Americans who believe in equality, dignity, and the right to live freely without discrimination.
That support does not end with words. It goes to the polls.
Every politician who chooses to target transgender people, undermine LGBTQ+ rights, or remain silent while others do the damage should understand this: the people who stand with this community are voters, and they will remember who stood up for them—and who did not.
Governor Spanberger’s recognition of this matters. It sends a message that the LGBTQ+ community should not be ignored, pushed aside, or used as a political punching bag.
To every politician who thinks this community is too small to matter: underestimate them at your own risk. The majority of Americans who support their rights have a voice, and in November, they have a vote.
Equality is not a political favor. It is a right. And those who defend it will have the support of the people who believe in it.
Yep. I’ve pointed to her and Mikie Sherrill as Dems in tight races who resolutely refused to betray trans constituents. It didn’t prevent her from winning convincingly and it’s great to see her follow through on actual policy.
“It sends a message to campaigns across the country, said Tyler Hack, who is the executive director of the Christopher Street Project, a group fighting for candidates that support trans rights. Hack told Erin in the Morning that Spanberger was proof that winning elections did not necessitate sacrificing transgender rights and equity.”
"Spanberger said the testimony of families of transgender youth had moved her to act."
I would be leery of asking children to subject themselves to the slings and arrows of the consrvatives but I would not, myself, shy away from telling the world about how hard it is to grow up trans and be missing the whole experience of being a cis gender girl. Finally when I turned 50 I found my courage to transition AND I found a group of women to be my girlfriends and to walk with me though middle age as a woman. I missed so much of what my life should have been. Now at 68 I'm begining to grow old with my friends and I feel I belong. Our stories need to be told.
Glad to see at least a few Dems loudly taking a stand, even when it brings them no political advantage. Spanberger already won her election; her next campaign is years away, and most of the electorate would've forgotten by then one way or another. She didn't need to do this. She did it anyway.
This is the kind of outcome I was hoping for when I cast my vote for Governor Spanberger. Thank you so much governor! And please continue to stand up for the working and marginalized people of Virginia.
I was uncertain what sort of administration Gov. Spanberger would run, considering how she demurred when asked about trans issues during the campaign. This is welcome affirmation that we have an honest-to-goodness Democrat in Richmond. Thank you, governor!
What a breath of fresh, kind, sensible air! We need more of her kind of human beings to stand up against those who have chosen to weaponize the bible and use their brand of “religion” to denigrate a community that is already marginalized. Bravo and thank you!

Perhaps I, too, am a voter worth winning over.

Right on, Mike. Thank you. 🏆
Standing strongly for what is right got Spanberger the Governorship, and it's a very healthy development for this Commonwealth.

Can we get more of that, please?
Such a relief to see Democratic politicians who actually understand civil rights.

I am so proud of Governer Spanberger!!

Elon, must we be subjected to publicly hearing about your family feud?

Thanks for your reporting on this - I missed it in the MSM and haven’t checked the Mercury in a few weeks. Grateful for your work.
It is about time Virginia.
Encouraging and inspiring. Let’s do this!!!
Excellent news from Gov Spanberger! This is how a Democrat ought to combat the bigotry of the Republican party.
