This is besides the point, but why on earth did the men's bathroom not have stalls? Guys don't need to poop?

MY QUESTION TOO. I mean, obviously that's hardly the worst thing about this story, but the first thing I thought when I read that part was, what about when guys need to take a dump? Like...do they go outside behind the club or something???

Probably to prevent gay hookups in the bar bathroom.

If Luca needs a place to crash I’ve got a spare bedroom in a blue state.

I asked my male friends. Apparently most dive bar men’s room don’t have stalls, just a urinal. No idea why this is but we speculate that it’s because most guys are just in there to pee out the beer and don’t want to poop there anyway.

Totally besides the point but apparently not having stalls in a men’s room at a bar is a very common thing. One more reason to not hang out at bars I guess.

Reread the article:

"However, there were no stalls—only urinals, rendering it inaccessible to him as a trans man."

The bathroom would not be "inaccessible" to him if the only issue was that he had to wait for a stall to be free. This is saying the bathroom did not have any stalls in it.

They are so f'ing obsessed with what's in someone's pants. IT DOESN'T MATTER!!

The f'd up pervert in this story is the one looking over the bathroom stall. I'm a cis woman, I don't care who is using the bathroom next to me-I do care who thinks it's ok to violate my privacy in a public restroom. And it's NEVER a trans person being creepy.

Given this line (admittedly the whole story may not be there): "That’s when a man who said he was the bar owner burst into the women’s room,"... it seems clear to me that said bar owner is indeed a f'd-up pervert who was relishing the chance to look over that stall. It appears that he heard the other employee discussing the situation, and must have been drooling with anticipation. Seriously.

So true! What is up with these perverts who are focused on knowing what is in someone else's pants. These, ostensibly straight perverts are the problem, not trans people. That bar should be shut down.

WOW. This is what we've been asking - in all the transhysteria about trans women and which bathrooms they use -what about trans men? What happens when a trans man has to use the women's locker room since that was the sex assigned at birth? He used the bathroom for his gender at birth and STILL got arrested? oh my gawd. what fucking hypocrites. but we knew that.

It's going to result in dead cis people. Eventually trans people in these states will just have to start carrying weapons. These states also tend to have castle doctrine laws, which mean that you don't have a legal duty to retreat if you're in a place where you're legally allowed to be. If someone assaults you in a restroom that the law requires you to use, you are perfectly within your legal rights to pull out a firearm and put that person in the ground.

Ultimately, it's probably going to take a few high profile cases of trans people killing cis people in self-defense, in the restrooms bathroom bans require them to use, before these bathroom bans really die down. Conservatives only care about themselves. They don't care about the suffering they impose on trans people. They don't care about the suffering of gender-noncomforming cis lesbians. The only thing that will move the needle on this is when cis conservatives start being gunned down for harassing trans people in bathrooms. It's only when conservatives start to feel that their own lives are in danger that they'll actually have any compassion. A core prerequisite for being conservative is to have a profound lack of moral empathy. Until some white Karens start being shot dead by trans men, these bathroom bans aren't going anywhere.

This guy was also perfectly within his legal rights to piss in that toilet stall and they arrested him anyway. It's time to get used to it that perfectly legal things WILL get you in trouble if you do them while trans. Ask the Black community what that's like.

If trans people start gunning down transphobes, count on it that they're going to get the harshest possible punishment for it, and also count on it that transphobes are going to start gunning down trans people and get a slap on the wrist.

As much as I agree with the sentiment, I am terrified to have to defend myself. I can only imagine the extreme backlash the entire trans community would face.

The powers that be have already set the stage to declare that trans people are mentally ill, and it wouldn't be a huge leap for them to disarm all trans people.

Expand full comment
Tanya Laird's avatar

Yeah, it's hard to say how it would actually pan out. It's easy to say people will start arming themselves. But hell, I don't want to shoot somebody. That goes against everything I believe in.

And yeah, while reasonable people would realize the situations was entirely the fault of conservative cis people, conservative cis people also are terrible at accepting responsibility for their own actions. Look at what happened with Reagan and gun control in 1970s California. Conservatives only started liking gun control once the Black Panthers started arming themselves.

I just mentioned this about the Black Panthers in one of mine the other day.

I'm in no mood for bullshit like this and would shoot somebody than have them staring at me over a stall. Enough is enough. This entire system is pushing tons of people into the corner and against the wall. We're supposed to cower in fear? I'm not the fearful type and the BPP were my heroes in the 1960-70's.

Disarming trans people would be the least of my nightmares

As soon as there's any kind of pattern of trans people shooting and killing transphobes in self-defence, I'd expect Fox News to blow that up into "these trans people are all crazy murderers who will kill you for using the wrong pronouns" and that'll be all the excuse transphobes need to start shooting trans people on sight and then later insist that it looked like they had a gun

Absolutely find ways to ruin conservatives' days in order to make them give a fuck whether we live or die, but this ain't it, we're outnumbered like fifty to one and discriminated against, escalating to lethal violence is not going to end well for us

I don't trust anyone who is looking to disarm any specific group in the US. A loss of rights is a loss of rights. We already have an uphill battle ahead of us.

There’s a restaurant in Gilbert,AZ. I think name is Liberty Market. There are , I think, 7 stalls, each with fully enclosed walls and doors that provide total privacy, both genders use the same area, a with a row of shared sinks for handwashing. of the rooms has a urinal in addition to a toilet seat. I wish more public spaces were set up this way to eliminate this battle of public restrooms

Legally speaking, there is no duty to retreat in South Carolina. The same is true in many states with bathroom bans. If you are in one of these states, and the law requires you to use the bathroom of your birth sex? You are perfectly within your legal right to shoot to kill anyone that attempts to force you out of that bathroom. You have a right, actually an obligation to be there. Lethal force is completely legally justified to protect yourself from assault in such a case.

Of course, in practice, the 2nd Amendment only really applies to straight white men. Minority groups don't have 2nd Amendment rights.
