What senseless hatred. What blind incompetence. All a smokescreen to protect a handful of rich, antisocial assholes’ ability to accumulate an ever expanding fleet of yachts filled with caviar.

Disgusting.

I can't imagine being so ghoulish that my life's work would be the erasure of an entire group of people, just because they exist.

I think this can be fought in court. The community here in Houston paid for those crosswalks, not the sate, not the city. Also, I am wondering if we can put in aa much more permanent crosswalk that they could not remove easily. I for one, am fed up.

Another idea is to surround these crosswalks with rainbow flag murals. Big bright and bold ones that are on private property. Much harder for them to take those down

That a state government can get so worked up over something so small, highlights just how petty they really are. The desire to so completely eradicate any outward sign of support for us is at once laughable and yet frightening. It's the fact that they hold all the power that makes it so frightening. At some point, I hope better heads will prevail and we can get to a place where everyone just leaves each other alone to live their lives. I'm afraid that in order for those better heads to rise, we're going to have to suffer a major crisis. Authoritarians don't go quietly, they have to be overthrown.

Just be honest, Republicans. State openly and plainly that you hate any and every part of the LGBT community. Put it in writing. Lay all your cards on the table. We don't need any of this obfuscation about traffic laws and neutral politics. Be honest with yourselves and your constituents. That's all I ask at this point. You have strongly held beliefs, right? So why can't you just come out (pun intended) and say what you want to say?

Do that simple thing, or resign in cowardice, knowing your ideals are indefensible.

Personally, I think the rainbow sidewalks are kind of cool and pretty. I've always loved rainbows even before or beyond any gay community symbolism.

You're thinking too small. I'd like to see them remove the ideology of american car culture from the streets. (what would that even mean?)

Makes sense that Pride crosswalks would reduce accident rates- being brightly colored, they're harder for drivers and pedestrians to ignore or overlook, so they probably reduce both crosswalk blow-throughs 𝘢𝘯𝘥 jaywalking. The yellow, red, and orange stripes probably even make drivers think "stop" subconsciously as they approach.

Which only makes this bit of petty evil even worse.

Texas what a fucking bigoted state - republicans once again force their biased unfounded beliefs on everyone. I know that there are some Texans that don’t agree but unfortunately far and few between. All those that do not agree should come out on the streets and protest loudly and clearly

I’d love to go paint “stained glass windows” on the crosswalks…I have a feeling that would be fine. Or, maybe a portrait of the Last Supper on various crosswalks close to restaurants. Ooohhhh the mind is full of ideas!

What a load of bullshit.

In Texas it's about pride crosswalks of course, but they didn't stop their insanity there. A friend and former neighbor took an alley beside her home that was an eyesore and converted it into a "fairy alley." Neighbors helped some with the upkeep; people would take walks and drives to see it. No matter, the state insists that the painted alley is to be replaced with blacktop. What a small-minded state government Texas has...

I live in Boston. My ex went to Fenway for her primary care and PREP. Fenway is the only queer focused health provider in the state. While there are other places in Massachusetts to get GAC, this is devastating news.

"symbols, flags, or other markings conveying social, political, or ideological messages"

All crosswalks are markings that convey a social message, namely "pedestrians should cross the street here". Street markings also often convey political and ideological messages about how the given society prioritizes different modes of transport. For example, a crosswalk conveys a very different message from a continuous sidewalk, despite often serving the same basic function.
