Following backlash, the school gave one young actress’s role to a boy—and told her to share the role of Audrey with another girl as consolation. Then they cancelled it altogether.
I guess we're not staging "As You Like It" in Texas anymore...
But there are plays even before Shakespeare that could not comply with this incomprehensible lunacy. In 1671 “The Amorous Prince” was written (and staged by others) by a woman named Aphra Behn, which contains these lines:
“GUILLIAM Why, forsooth, what do you intend to pass for: a girl, or a boy?
CLORIS Why, what I seem to be. Will it not do?
GUILLIAM Yes, yes, it may do, but I know not what. I wish love would transmogrify me to a girl now.”
One more time, Texas finds itself in a mess of its own making! Whether it’s transgender rights, LGBTQ+ rights, access to birth control, or now taking steps to stop a play because of fears surrounding legislation that its own politicians passed and the governor signed, Texas continues to create problems that never needed to exist in the first place.
How much longer will the people of Texas tolerate this bullshit? These laws, driven by prejudice and discriminatory attitudes, are creating fear, restricting freedoms, and interfering with people's lives, families, and personal decisions.
This is one seriously F_ _ ked-up state when its leaders seem more interested in controlling people's lives than addressing the real issues facing their constituents.
November is the opportunity for Texans to change direction! I hope voters turn out in force, elect new leadership at the state level, and begin taking back their state. Texas deserves leaders who represent ALL its people, protect individual freedoms, and focus on making life better—not politicians who divide people and manufacture one controversy after another.
Drag/cross-dressing is protected by the first amendment. We have freedom of expression, and thus the freedom to dress ourselves, without government imposed dress codes, and the freedom to say whatever the hell we want, including but not limited to reciting some lines in a school play. We are guaranteed that freedom by the very first thing they put in the damn constitution, so the whole concept of SB12 is hot garbage, violating Texans constitutional rights. The same people arguing against this harmless school play will scream bloody murder when they're not allowed their directly harmful hate speech.
Wait, so in their reasoning, they were okay with abusive relationship themes in the musical as long as the abusive relationship is depicted between a boy and a girl, but not when it's between two girls? WTF.
I think it's also worth noting, per Houston Public Media, that it's not at all clear in what way SB 12 (2025) would apply to this case. So whether they're saying 2023 or 2025, either way they're full of shit.
Do they not know the history of theater?? (eyeroll)
They are to stupid to know the history of theater and that at one time men played both sexes
The killing and the blood were OK but we have to draw the line at gender casting.

Better not tell them about Peter Pan or all of Shakespeare.

Audrey and Seymour are both trans-coded anyway!
