This ban is draconian and absolutely horrible. The penalties are incredibly severe. I can only hope - as pointed out in the article - that it will be successfully challenged in court.
The ban is made all the worse by the fact that PR residents can’t just drive to a nearby state to get care.
I used to wonder if PR might be a safe place for trans Americans to flee to if their own state was going sour, and if they didn’t want to face a customs/immigration barrier. Obviously I have been strongly disabused of that notion. Anywhere can go unsafe, anytime, apparently.
Such disappointing, but unsurprising, news. Let's hope that the voters of Puerto Rico dis-elect Colon and grasp the injustice of this cruel, foolish law and get it repealed.
Jail time is ridiculous. I’m a parent. My stomach dropped to the floor when my daughter told me she was trans. Not because I didn’t approve but because I knew how difficult it would be to live in our hate-filled phobic society. The 1st action I took was to get her a gender counselor to support her through the transition process. So I’d go to jail for loving her so much and dropping all my expectations of what I thought her life would be to help her with transition to manage dysphoria? Insane. When will the politicians get out of our private lives? I hope this is blocked quickly before the bumbling fool gets any ideas. If they start criminalizing this small community, it’s over. No way in hell and over my dead body will they take her away from me (she’s also on the spectrum) and put her in a cage. I love you all and please know you’re not alone. There are many cis people in this fight with you and we will never give up. 💞
That's always the way it seems to be, isn't it? If you're cis, do whatever you want, but if you're trans, you have zero rights, even if your parents and your doctor support you.
Istg I don't know what to do if this sets precedent and the red states start doing this too. I finally got on HRT at 18 after wanting it for 3 years, and I turned 19 just a few months before they started targetting adults under 19. Now I can only hope I turn 21 before the laws just take it away again. It feels like I'm trying to outrun these restrictions and I can only age so fast. I hate that I have to spend this time worrying about rushing through the next two years just so I can feel somewhat safe again. I don't even want to think of the potential age requirements for surgeries after extreme bans like this.
This is horrid, and how in the world do they justify 21, age of consent is 18. Just more proof that they are intending to ban all gender affirming care.
Age requirements in the US are just so damn weird. 18 to join the military and die, 21 to drink or smoke, in my state the age of consent is 16 for girls and 18 for men. That last part especially makes me want to vomit. And in almost all of these right wing states the government seems to believe you're old enough, mature enough, to be a parent at any age where you manage to live through giving birth since abortion is being outlawed but at the same time aren't mature enough to make so many life choices.
I want to be super clear, I don't think there should be any limits vis-a-vis age for gender affirming care or a name change. But damn do we need age limits, federally, for marriage and other things. I don't think 18 year olds are mature enough to do some things (like military service) but we need to start somewhere.
They act like parenthood is some walk in the park that anyone can ace at SIXTEEN, but they treat gender affirming care as if it's the same as alcohol. But estrogen has never single-handedly made someone go on a violent rampage and hurt or kill people. I've never gotten into my car after a testosterone shot and run over a family of five at 90 mph. My transfemme friend isn't addicted to her estrogen, and my transmasc friend doesn't violently attack his family every time he does his T shot.
Alcohol is literally poison. We have substantial evidence of countless lives being destroyed by it. The legal system wants to equate a terrible, often life-ruining drug with synthetic versions of the hormones that we all naturally produce, that we can safely take with minimal risk of addiction or accidentally killing ourselves in one go, and that are statistically proven to be beneficial for nearly everybody who decides to take them.
Oh, that's the other thing: Why are they cracking down on things like hormones or puberty blockers for teens who a) rarely get them and b) already have enough barriers in place, but they haven't put nearly as much energy into the prevention of underage drinking? Do they really care about protecting anyone, or is it just a power trip to protect their imaginary utopia where transness doesn't exist?
My mother got married at 17 to my father who was 34. It was gross and should have been illegal. He was abusive, and they were divorced after only a few short years. I don't care that my sister and I wouldn't have existed, that was just wrong.
The GOP ensured the doors to education funding are closed to our communities, even as the need for more of our own trans community to attend law school becomes more apparent. They only want one thing from us, and we should fight them with the ferocity of an angry wolverine or swarm of killer bees to deny this to them.
So people can go to war at age 18 or join the military , a real risk taking behavior , but someone cannot even change their name or follow drs advice or recommendations around gender care ? Bullshit!
Everyday seems to bring more of the dregs of Humanity to the surface. Fear will only feed it - Love will help trans- mute it. Im choosing to hold the consciousness of Love and sending it out to everyone who needs some right now.
On an up note- I just received my USA passport in the mail - w/ a current picture and my updated gender marker of M!!! If you’ve waiting to submit your requests - Go for it!
This is so very disgusting and horrid I am having trouble finding the words! It certainly reinforces a patriarchal belief that our bodies and those of our children are not our own. That they are the possessions of the State!

Mom of an adult trans daughter on the spectrum, too. My dead body will be right there beside yours. We will never give up!
Heartbreaking. Sending light and love to the trans and nonbinary youth of Puerto Rico.
I had been thinking lately it would be insightful to visit Puerto Rico. I have some coworkers from there. I know that won't happen now.
For "Missouri", read Mississippi.
¡Mierda!

e tu, Puerto Rico? so sad.
