Mike Stuart is deep down the rabbit hole of hateful ignorance -- for example, he helped to remove exceptions for rape and incest from West Virginia's total abortion ban. His religiosity -- "we must value children" etc -- is pretty rich coming from the administration that is sitting on evidence of probably the biggest child sex trafficking operation in history.
I am so sick of hospitals trying to justify cutting health care to trans patients with statements like “we have to do this or lose the ability to offer care to all our patients”. This is just them saying other patients are more important than trans patients. Fuck them. Protect ALL your patients as required by the oath you forget as soon as money is at risk. Fuck them all. I am alarmed and deeply disappointed by the decision of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago to pause or restrict gender-affirming medical care for transgender children and adolescents.
This rollback of services — which emerged after political pressure and threats to withhold federal funding tied to an executive order from former President Donald Trump — is fundamentally at odds with the core mission of pediatric medicine: to protect the health, dignity, and well-being of all children under their care.
Gender-affirming care for transgender youth — including surgeries, hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and supportive mental health services — is recognized by major medical organizations as evidence-based and, in many cases, life-saving.
Withholding or limiting access to this care places already vulnerable young people at increased risk for severe distress, mental health challenges, and preventable harm.
Rather than capitulating to political coercion, health care institutions — especially those regarded as leaders in pediatric medicine — must uphold their ethical and legal obligations to provide nondiscriminatory care grounded in science, compassion, and established standards of practice.
The health of every child should be protected without fear of political retribution.
We urge Lurie Children’s Hospital to reaffirm its commitment to all its patients and to restore comprehensive, medically appropriate care for transgender youth without delay.
