In my opinion, it is only through the work of the private citizenry that authoritarianism can be defeated. Yes, it's just a crosswalk, but it's a statement. Authoritarians hate statements that aren't theirs. Those statements show that authoritarians are not omnipotent. Nothing scares authoritarians more than discovering that their powers are limited (or worse yet, able to be mocked). Now, if only citizenry will push back on the assaults on the Smithsonian museum, the Kennedy Center and so many other targets of the self-righteous bigots.

Trump anointing himself Tsar of the Kennedy Center...and immediately selecting an all MAGA clique of second, third, or fourth rate losers, like Kid Rock, KISS (one good song and it wasn't "Beth"), George Strait, Sylvester Stallone (Adrian said "nope!"), and unaccountably, also Gloria Gaynor, who doesn't fit in with the others somehow...it parodies ITSELF.

The Trump administration is murderous for we queer Americans, dangerous for families, an extinction level event for the American middle class, deadly for women, genocidal for immigrants and people of color, and it's HELL ON EARTH for satire, irony, surreality, and absurdist humor.

The best comedians cannot compete with the inspired hatred of reality and empiricism of the MAGA minions.

Here, here! The Make America Great movement is very pointedly destroying everything that truly MADE America great. Perhaps middle America will realize that they have made a deal with the devil and will take appropriate action. I only hope it doesn't happen too late.

This is fantastic replace any that are erased these rainbows should be placed in all cities and towns in our country show them all that the people will not be denied

The rainbow has always meant a promise for hope and new beginnings, rather foundational qualities for our many-splendored ever-diverse communities we term LGBTQIA+, and so therefore a perfect metaphor for allyship and solidarity opposing pathetically obvious fascism and blatantly blunt-edged oppression.

49 people died nine years ago at Pulse.

If the fascists win, it's all of us.

Never forget.

Can't paint over the sky, nor escape the symbolism in that perfectly timed rainbow.

"Orlando Citizens Defy DeSantis, Re-Color Pulse Memorial Sidewalk In Rainbow Colors"

Your headline is a beautiful thing, and so is the fact of that defiant restoration. Thank you.

To borrow from ACT UP . . . "WE'RE HERE WE'RE QUEER -- WE'RE NOT GOING BACK!"

Yes!!! Even though it will be erased by the first storm they have given a big finger to DeSatan.

It is more than a crosswalk,- it is a memorial to the people who were massacred in the LGBTQSIA+ community at Pulse, and was put there by the community to honor and remember them. It seems to me they need to use paint next time, instead of chalk. To make it more visible at night, add the small round glass reflection beads FDOT uses in their paint for reflection purposes at night to meet the DOT's standards, and help with visibility. Give that rainbow staying power.

I wish they used paint. They can just wash away the chalk with water or wait for rain. Let's make them pay to correct it.

The absolute fucking pettiness of this regime never ceases to amaze.

Are they seriously playing this as a budget issue when it is 1) a small number of painted crosswalks, which is not expensive in the first place and 2) the only new rainbow-crosswalk-related expenditures happening right now are the ones THEY are making to paint them over?

Erin, has the Resident managed to commandeer the Progress Pride crosswalks in the DuPont Circle neighborhood? I'm specifically thinking of the ones on 17th Street, but the fucker is just pretty freaking evil all around...

If I remember correctly, Orlando City Government converted most of its sex segregated public facilities to “single user, family & accessible” sometime before 2020. Orlando is (or was) a relatively welcoming and inclusive place.

Stay Good Orlando 💙

Great story!! Thank you! Love the appearance of the rainbow -- the universe knows the truth.

Good for Orlando! I lived in Florida in the 70s and the state is unrecognizable to me now.
