Exactly!!! How does he say, "The trans issue for me is so novel?" Has he never talked to his godson???

The only thing I can think of is that he has some back alley deal with DNC leadership to give him the nomination. And he is already trying to sway the conservatives. They did it with Hillary. They'll do it again. We need a new progressive party so badly in this country. Throw the Dems on the trash heap of history.

And that f'qing Cass Report needs to be shamed LOUDLY. There hasn't been enough pushback on it in the media, and too many people are accepting it as gospel.

What I never understand is the people who easily reject the US HHS "report" on trans people as "political" but see the Cass review as this unquestionable thing (Which by the way, doesn't even say a lot of what the right says it says).

Like, do they not understand that the same politics drove both? Possibly even some of the same people?

Yet the deny the actual peer reviewed and accepted science in favor of the word of hacks that have been proven wrong over and over. It's so frustrating.

Because any argument is disingenuous bullshit! They just figure out how to sell their bigotry so that people will buy it (which seems pretty easy to do with people who are just looking for someone to justify their hateful opinions). You can’t have a rational debate with people who are arguing in bad faith. If they were arguing in good faith, there would be consistent principles (other than a convenient narrative to justify their position) and they would be discerning, curious and do research beyond just starting and stopping with things that support their narrative. What is it we say…”every accusation is a confession”!

I doubt that. No Californian has been nominated for the presidency from either party since Reagan. The establishment runs away from the very association. Jerry Brown, a very solid ("pragmatic," often angering progressives but getting a lot done for them as governor) left-of-center Californian got nowhere at all.

(I'm discounting Harris because she did not get the nomination through the usual process. Much as I strongly approved of her, I doubt that she would have gotten it that way.)

The two-party dynamics are deeply entrenched in the Electoral College system, and a new party can only arise in a time of extreme crisis with a mass movement. It hasn't happened for close to two centuries, and is less likely now than before. Progressives must take over the Democratic party the way fascists took over the Republican one.

Agreed. I think we've seen how a party gets occupied by it's more extreme elements. If it worked for them, I guess that's "what the people want." It's a shame, IMO, but I just ordered my AOC shirt and Bernie hat (2 people I used to mock!)!

I’ve written to the DNC multiple times over the last few months asking them NOT to support Newsom. I’ve told the DNC each time, that I will NEVER, EVER vote for Newsom, even if it means voting 3rd party. More people need to write/call the DNC & oppose Newsom. Newsom is definitely slime & is a huge danger to the trans community.

New sport-relevant research found that transgender women athletes have lower aerobic performance and lower physical power (except for grip strength) as compared with cisgender women athletes. More sport-specific research like this is needed, so that we can move beyond the toxic musings of people who don’t know anything about this.

I don't trust the guy. Sure he stood up to Trump's is invasion of L.A. But it was pretty clear that he was doing it for political mileage. He didn't actually do anything to stop Trump. No doubt he is one of the old guard choices for president in 28, but I don't trust him much more than I trust Trump. I fact, I think he would have over Trump's disregard for the constitution in order to aggregate all that power for himself. All of that on top of his pandering to transphobes. No, thank you.

Jayna Sheats's avatar

Yes, he stood up but in a rather flimsy way even then. He is definitely playing both sides in a way that isn't going to get him anywhere on either side, in my opinion. Progressives will see through him, the Democratic old-guard establishment trusts no one from California, and of course he isn't winning a single Republican vote (give or take a small margin of error).

I look forward to Rob Bonta becoming governor. He is solid.

This is a complete falsehood from Gavin Newsom - trans people aren’t at all novel to him. His godchild is transgender. More below.

““The trans issue for me is so novel,” Newsom said. “I'm trying to understand as much as anyone else the whole ‘pronoun’ thing.”

https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/newsoms-bizarre-interview-with-maga?r=1teor6&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false

Newsom’s father was a functionary for the Getty family. And Newsom himself made his initial money by investments in his business by the Getty family.

Nats Getty is a transgender man and member of the prominent Getty family. Nats is also Gavin Newsom’s godchild. Nats is also married to a trans woman. Gavin Newsom toasted them at their wedding.

Toast: Gov. Gavin Newsom of California, who is a close friend of the Getty family and Nats Getty’s godfather, recorded a video toast for the newlyweds. “I’m proud of you and I’m proud of Gigi,” Mr. Newsom said. “I’m also proud to be in a state like California that did its part to punch above its weight to lead the way. It’s a point of pride, and it’s my privilege to wish you happily ever after.”

Gavin Newsom is a slimy, disengenuos piece of shit.

I guess I’m just longing for the days when trans people were able to live their lives in peace and this whole issue wasn’t occupying the front pages on a daily basis. I miss those days.

Several decades from now, when our coastal cities are underwater, and our climate is out of control, society will regret spending so much time on non-issues such as trans athletes, and ignoring the very real dangers in our environment.

OR...the grim survivors of climate change in the 2070s will believe that catastrophic unpredictable shifting climate patterns are the fault of we transgender Americans existing. There's no guarantee that anyone in the future will be better educated and more informed than any of the garden variety anti-Trans numpties running around today, especially with the destruction of the US Department of Education and complete devolution of education standards to the states and the education budgeting process relegated to memos in sharpie rather than researched and facilitated by congressional committees and legislative due process.

As a Trans woman nearing the end of her sixth decade of life, I rather doubt we have any future as a community. I can year the growls of genocide oozing forth from the freshly ginned up murder machine even in this very moment.

The shifting climate is indeed catastrophic, but it's not unpredictable. We have very good computer models telling us exactly what is going to happen. We're just letting it happen anyway.

Expand full comment
Jaimie Hileman's avatar

What I mean when I say unpredictable in this sense is that rapidly and catastrophically the rate of change and the impact of that increasing rate of change will snowball and destroy both our ability to forecast and our ability to create new models. Yes, the historical models based upon observation and collation of hundreds of thousands of years of phenomena, from ice core samples to deep ocean mineral deposits, the models you refer to, DO work. And they DO tell us that disaster on a level that will utterly crush the complex system of monocrop production, processing, and transportation that feeds the planet, and from there, catastrophe will grow unpredictability worse unpredictability faster. We won't have time to react or do much of anything when the end comes. Some charitably believe in a 90-95% die off of humanity but I don't think the numbers will be that low once the sociocultural knock-on effects enter the picture, of war, famine, disease.

Even more than the rest, the most frightening part is Newsom having staff (almost certainly approved by him) putting out such an absurdly transparent lie about the "furbies"." Not only does the case cited have absolutely *nothing* connected with "furbies" or "furries," Newsom could have cited it if he meant it. That really puts his credibility beyond the pale.

The pandering to transmisic prejudices is horrible and politically disqualifying, but this is mentally and ethically disqualifying.

This is incredibly frustrating. Regarding AB Hernandez, those who campaigned against her are a group of extremists led by certain school board members across Southern California such as Sonia Shaw, who’s currently running for California Superintendent and maintains close ties to Bill Essayli. These people routinely travel between school districts to push anti-LGBTQ+ policies, and even attend AB’s games specifically to harass her.

I heard some of them were removed from one of the games for causing a disruption. And when AB’s name was announced during the award ceremony, the crowd erupted in applause. Everyone who knows her recognizes her dedication and hard work she’s poured into her sport.

It’s especially ironic that they continue to cry “unfairness” and resort to bullying tactics, given that another trans athlete in the same area hasn’t competed in major events or earned any medals or recognition.
