Rule #6: The Stalin Rule — Stand Together with Anyone Who Will Join You to Disturb, Disrupt, and Diminish the Illiberal Structures.
Even if you share nothing in common beyond a love of democracy and how much you loathe their politics in normal times, you fight side-by-side with them.
I also cancelled over the Chapelle and Gervais stuff. When I heard of this boycott, I resubscribed with the thought I could wind up regretting it if Netflix caves. My rationale was to support them in this onslaught and hope they do better. That said, they do have some great LGBTQ+ content, but sadly they also platform a lot of ick too. I hope this helps them add more queer stories and ditch some of the ick. (Though I'm not holding my breath.)
I, too, cancelled over the Dave Chappelle stuff. I suppose I'm ready to forgive them now. I didn't expect Netflix to stand its ground with this attack. Good for them!
I resubscribed on the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” theory, then 3 days later saw the Ed Gein bio pic trailer and cancelled again. I’m not disputing whether or not it’s a fair depiction, but given the narrative about trans people being homicidal being pushed by the Right/federal government, totally not the right time for that trailer.
I mean, cancelling a subscription because of one show is basically rage quitting. It's one thing if the network makes a habit of streaming severely racist, sexist, or misogynistic material, but if it's simply one show, I feel like that's a little overly dramatic. If the content is seriously severe enough (such as directing people to engage in violence, or inciting crimes up to and including murder), then subscribers can put pressure through reporting the content and advocating for other subscribers to also report the content. Then, if the network refuses to respond or even goes so far to defend the content, then a boycott would be called for.
Also remember that a lot of this content is being streamed because of contracts signed by a production company (such as Paramount, Tri-Star, etc) and the contract was signed before the nature of each content was reviewed or even discussed, so Netflix can sometimes have their hands tied. A contract can state that certain material is not ok to stream, and the producer might then argue that the content doesn't infringe on the contract because [reason], and a very lengthy and costly legal battle can ensue. It's a really difficult area when it comes to just one or two shows or movies.
If Netflix were to display a cogent predilection to showing the same types of offensive material, then yes, a boycott is absolutely called for.
If you are referring to the Dave Chappelle show, there was a lot of controversy back in 2021, and they fired a trans woman, there were protests at Netflix hq, etc.--it wasn't 'just one show'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Netflix_walkout
I was never really aware of Netflix's controversy, I never followed them. My comment is just a blanket statement of choosing to avoid an entire franchise for just one thing - I wasn't trying to defend Netflix if that's what you mean.
As dangerous as they can with the power their money brings them, Musk et al., remind me of a bunch of insecure adolescent boys, bullying the other kids to try to hide how scared they are.
Every day these useless politicians and their oligarch masters whine about how much they hate our Trans community and anything that they perceive as being Trans, even though they don’t have any idea what they’re talking about! It’s a Narcissistic state that they are stuck in and have no free will whatsoever anymore because they are so desperate and afraid that to stop their lies means that their own predilections will come to light! And it’s because they’re all stuck in their own closets and they can’t handle the fact that those closets are crumbling around them! Every single day one or more of them are exposed as pedophiles and it’s scaring the rest of the MAGAT Congress into thinking they will be the next Republican in the Pedophile Hit Parade! But they won’t resign because they are too addicted to the Oligarch money and so they are desperate to distract us from their monstrous behavior and it’s not working anymore! DOWN WITH ALL TYRANTS! 😈🖕🏽
We need to not let perfect be the enemy of the good and take victories as they come. We need to give positive reinforcement to those who stand against this anti-democratic censorship. Netflix has surprised me with their spine, so I'm keeping our subscription. Reality is that these streaming services need to offer a wide variety of content to keep growing their subscriber base, though we should never tolerate content promoting hate and we need to give feedback to services that have this kind of content. In this case the content is good.
Great for Netflix it’s wonderful to see an organization stand up to these bullies. I’m sorry for Musk’s trans child who has been pushed to the side, but more so for Musk who has and will miss out on so much joy that a child can bring. I would ask musk if he would rather have a straight child with a disease like cancer? What an asshole !!!
I have no sympathy for musk. His stances on trans issues, in public life or private, around his daughter or the trans community in general, are his own choices and if he wanted that "joy that a child can bring" he could have chosen to not be a transphobic asshat and had it.
Let us see if Republicans can learn from their mistakes. It is getting obvious that running on hating the Trans-community is losing followers. Do they have the ability to see this and embrace change, or will it be their down fall? I don't see rooting for hate as being on the winning team.
The Republicans are going to have a lot of their hands when the Epstein files are released. They target the vulnerable communities when they know the sins they have committed against young women and men.
Nice to see one media provider apply freedom of expression even-handedly. Better a platform that provides space to all perspectives, even offensive ones, than one vulnerable to restricting representation of mine. Just need to make sure the algorithms don't tilt the deck behind the scenes.
I contacted Netflix and requested they stand strong against the bully that wants trans representation removed from their programming. they will get glad in the same shoes they got mad in. Stand Strong and F Dave $hitpail.
Support for the right is dwindling at record pace. The crazier the Trump regime gets the fewer people they have attack us. That's not to say they aren't dangerous because they are. But also remember the military has successfully countered authoritarian threats three separate times in the past. By the reaction the generals gave to Trump and Hegseth, I'm fairly certain they will not tolerate a total takeover of OUR country.
I subscribed to Netflix for the first time since 2019 as an anti-boycott move. Chappelle maybe problematic, but these activist moves are temporal and culture shift happens slowly, but it is steered by small shifts in the rudder like this one. I am glad to see signs from Jimmy Kimmel's cancelation and Netflix's success that we stand a good a chance to overturn the Republican grip on Congress with the midterm elections. I feel encouraged that democracy may outlast this fascist power grab.
asking voice to text. This is great to hear. I don't know what's up Elon's bum. Definitely not me. Why does he chase me and others around a social media if he hates his daughter and trans women in general? I think he's got gender issues.
I'm still boycotting Netflix for the Dave Chappelle stuff a few years ago. Does this mean I should subscribe again? :P

Subscribed. Anything to make Elon mad. I'll short some more Tesla stock while I'm at it.

Yes, under the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" principle, and this seems like the bigger of the two issues.
A trend of Social Conservative impotency I hope continues and increases exponentially.
As dangerous as they can with the power their money brings them, Musk et al., remind me of a bunch of insecure adolescent boys, bullying the other kids to try to hide how scared they are.
His daughter is surely ashamed of him. :-)

I agree no sympathy for musk He is an asshole with no redeeming qualities just sorry for his child
Once again we see the fascists are a very loud minority.

Finally, a teeenie-tiny piece of good news!

I have been rewarching Dead End: Paranormal Normal park - it's an amazing show (and I messaged Netflix that I would cancel if it was removed).

Thank you Erin for this report and for the links to the Netflix clips. FYI for those reluctant to click links that go to Twitter/Xitter/X, you can use this Chrome extension to redirect the link to a mirror site that denies the tithing to Elon. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/xcancelcom-redirector/pgbegepjkmpcolalkpbakcbjlkodakie
