The Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville was lit up in rainbow colors, despite DeSantis declaring "Freedom Summer," which would replace all Pride lights with red, white, and blue.
I'm jealous. I didn't even know it was happening to be able to attend, and I was working late in downtown Jax last night. I would have gone had I known about it!
I live in Oregon and have a newly found sister that lives in Florida that I would like to visit and meet. I had made a vow to never go to Florida and spend my Queer supporting money. Then I see a protest like this and I realize I need to wear my Queer colors from head to toe, stamp my paper bills and go. Queers and supporters need help in Florida. I can't imagine the organization it took to light up the bridge in this protest.
When I decorate my home I fly the US Flag along with my pride flag. I hate that when I see a home with an American flag I immediately get negative feelings. :( I want my flag back.
The organisation was quite masterful. The org team practiced it on Wednesday night, announced it on Thursday and set up Thursday/friday, and we did it last night. Very well done by the org team
Just love how the community responded - beautiful!
And what better way to say 'fascist state' than to scream "freedom" while banning all displays of joy and community and mandating that only the official state colors be displayed.
Isn't it beautiful! Thete is no freedom in Florida but at least there is community fighting for their rights against the dick-tater. Hope to continue to see more riots and defiance. ♥️🧡💛💚💙💜
The actual historical Freedom Summer in Mississippi in 1964 was all about standing up for civil rights and fighting oppression of disfavored minorities.
DeSantis's proclaimed Freedom Summer nonsense is the *exact opposite*. He's even banning Juneteenth displays along with Pride displays. Does it get more transparently fascist than that?
"You have freedom. The State will now instruct you on how to properly celebrate your freedom. Do not deviate from these instructions, or there will be consequences. Heil DeSantis!"
Next it will be what colors you can (or can’t) wear, what you can paint your house (or not), rainbow-colored dog collars are illegal, and a lot of foods will not be permitted in FL (those which you could make rainbows on your plate ). That gov guy imagines Florida is his own personal fiefdom. Maybe Floridians will show him a different kind of ‘freedom’ this summer…
I'm not sure how true that is, I'd like to see some statistics or studies to corroborate that, in any event we do know that it's a sign of massive insecurity.
Was very fun to participate in, and I hope we do it again this month and on a larger scale across Florida. Thanks for covering the event 🤟🤟

Bravo!!
The audacity of DeSantis to call his actions “freedom”. BS

THIS!!!
"Freedom" to a fascist means "You have the FREEDOM to do what WE tell you to do."

AND Racist with a capital R.
Right?
The use of language to call these laws "freedom" is terrifying. Orweillian is the perfect word for it.
I absolutely adore the response by locals. Never dim your light friends <3

I so appreciate this story! I'm tearing up at the courage of these bringers of light.

Love these protests 🏳️🌈
Yup I fixed, hoped nobody noticed haha.
Most adults know that the more vocally homophobic you are the more likely it is that you’re a closet case. These guys do realize that right?

Wow I'm in Jax and I had no idea this was happening! Absolutely brilliant, hope to join next time!
Same!
Well played, people of Jacksonville!
