This is a great reminder that we should not take for granted our ability to advocate for ourselves, especially now when the odds are not in our favor.

There is a woman in Kansas riding an electric tricycle to run errands for her disabled daughter. Jamie Miller is a military veteran who had gender reassignment surgery in 2013 and holds a court order identifying her as female. Kansas passed Senate Bill 244 this year, and in February the state started mailing trans people letters telling them their licenses were void as of February 26 — some of the letters landing after the date. Miller called, was told to email her court order, got a form response, and never heard back. So the state put her in a vise.

This is the world we live in right now.

Kansas doesn't say Jamie Miller isn't a woman. Kansas says the Department of Revenue is unable to process the concept at this time.

"That's not what I fought for." — Jamie Miller, U.S. military veteran, on Kansas voiding her driver's license, August 2026
