i don't understand why more people/media aren't talking about how this punitive use of federal funds violates South Dakota v Dole, which established the conditions under which federal funds can be withheld from states (and this ain't that)

Probably because that case constrains Congress’s reach into state laws, not specifically the President. Trump - because of Republicans in Congress not following the historic rules of checks and balances, and due to ceding control of their own appropriated funds to the states to Trump, are allowing him to be dictator by giving him sole control of the entire federal budget. This has never happened before. And then the corrupt Roberts Court ruled the president enormous immunity while in office - also unprecedented and counter to the checks and balances our Founders relied upon. The issue now is to get the GOP out of as many offices as possible, everywhere.

"Probably because that case constrains Congress’s reach into state laws, not specifically the President."

And yet no Executive Order is enforceable in any way if it conflicts with any law. If the Congress can not do it by passing legislation, then the President can not. It may well have never come up as a legal question before, but all precedents and constitutional text point exclusively to that conclusion, to the extent that should it be brought even to this SCOTUS, I would expect a 9-0 decision invalidating the EO involved.

I would expect a 7-2 decision. Alito and Thomas can *always* be counted on to do the wrong thing.

The sad truth is that most Americans don't care as much about trans people as they do about their property and their sports teams. But we need to keep trying to educate them that trans folk are the proverbial canary in the coal mine.

One can just about picture a group of these... 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦... sitting around a conference table brainstorming ideas:

Nazi #1: "Maine still isn't playin' ball. What are we gonna do?"

Nazi #2: "Huh... well, children are the issue, right?"

Nazi #1: "Yeaa-a-a-ah?"

Nazi #2: "So what do you do with a misbehaving child?"

Nazi #1: "Spank 'em?"

Nazi #2: "No, no, think bigger."

Nazi #1: "Gas 'em?"

Nazi #2: "𝘛𝘰𝘰 big... for now."

Nazi #1: "Uuuuuhhh... wait, I've got it! You send 'em to bed without any supper!"

*𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘭 𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳*

Nazi #2: "Oh that's too good. Find me a way to do that, but to the whole state. It's gonna be funny as hell!"

GOOD! The more We The People Push back against this Fascist False “God” these MAGATS Worship the better off we will be! Con-gress! Start growing a pair and a spine and spit in his eyes! Impeachment is Paramount Now! This Absolute Train wreck of an administration is illegal and illegitimate and should be stopped immediately! The Government does not dictate to us! WE DICTATE TO THEM! They are OUR EMPLOYEES!! They either help ALL Americans or they will not have a job after the next elections! And if you try to rig the elections AGAIN, you will not only lose your seat but also your freedom when you are prosecuted and convicted for TREASON! You and your Orange POS will be rotting in prison!

The kids should be buying their own lunches. They don’t have a job you say? Well they should get a job. With increased deportations there are countless agricultural and factory jobs available. Honestly, the Trump administration is doing them a favor getting them into the job market. If they save up their money and don’t eat too many school lunches they might get just enough money to flee this hell hole.

Trump says a lot of things. None of it true. In fact if he says something you can guarantee that he plans on doing exactly the opposite.

And let the calls for impeachment of this judge begin.

Donnie doesn't seem to grasp the concept of "checks and balances". He's is under the impression that since he's "the boss", what he says, goes. This is a democracy. There are systems in place to prevent tyranny. You know, that thing we fought England over in the late 1700s. We won't be ruled by a tyrannical despot who rules by iron fisted edicts in which he insists are laws, because, " I say so."

Thanks, as always, Erin, for such insightful and informative reporting. I spend a lot of time in Maine and have trans friends there, and so I am relieved to hear this news. Yet this issue impacts more than just trans people. As such, it is important that we in the trans community make sure that cis-gender folk understand the implications of Trump's attacks on trans folk in places like Maine.
