Equality PAC claims it seeks to support “pro-equality Democrats who will stand up for our community“. As a transgendered woman, I have to ask whose community exactly?

Sarah F's avatar

And I'd like to ask whether they're making campaign contributions from money contributed by trans people.

CM's avatar

Oof. That one really stings.

Michelle Paquette's avatar

OK, so Equality PAC seeks to support LGB causes, and further representation of LGB people in political life. Following HRC’s lead, of course.

Looks like we are back to the 1960s, again. The gay men in manly dark suits with narrow ties, and the lesbians in their A-lines and pearls, all being respectable and polite, not at all like those noisy and upsetting protesters, seeking to meet others on their own ground and happy to be second-class citizens.

Larry Erickson's avatar

You mean those "noisy and upsetting protesters" who were the ones who made the related rights a national issue? Oh no, we certainly wouldn't want to be like them!

Jaimie Hileman's avatar

It certainly ain't US.

Why am I not surprised….. haven’t these idiots witnessed virtually every dem that abandons trans people lose their respective races?

Apparently Dems have the vision of nematodes and the memories of goldfish. And they'll continue to suck and fail and flail and lose until they get it right, which probably won't be in time to save us from fascist maximalization.

I’m visualizing goldfish in a fishbowl, skimming the surface with wide-opened mouths for morsels of food dropped in by their benefactors. Yep. That fits.

When the HRC is abandoning us, it sure seems pretty damn bleak. At least I know not to give them another dime now.

Trish's avatar

Not the first time they've thrown us under the bus.

It's pretty bad to think it's efficient to disregard trans rights, in a campaign. It's a fundamental value that I'm not going to treat as a mere contested issue, it's one where I demand human rights, equal justice, damn it. These organizations need to spend more energy doing that.

Dianne Marie Leonard's avatar

True. All of us, or none of us--and, by "all" I mean *really* all. I hate to come across as a hardass, but I fall into a shitload of oppressed groups, as do people I love. Any candidate who throws anybody under the bus doesn't get my vote. Full stop. I say that as someone who first voted in 1972 at the age of 20.

Joel W. Crump's avatar

History will judge us by what we do, under the pressure of these dark days. Will we give up the fights? I haven't. Abortion rights, transgender rights, etc., are still up for debate. I'm not succumbing to Trump.

Dianne Marie Leonard's avatar

Nor am I. It's not just El Mango Mussolini, though. It's all of the fascists, doing all the shit they've been doing, for as long as they've been doing their shit. I like to say that my parents' and grandparents' generations learned to endure, learned to fight back, and learned to pass those skills down to the next generations. I am trying to do the same. You're right about history judging us for what we do. La luta continua.

Got an Acton donation request from OH Dems and emailed back "nope since she is anti-trans." Where does Hogg land on trans issues because man I'm really wishing more Dems had gotten behind him to primary all of these old guard, corporate-backed and fake culture war turncoat Dems.. I will vote blue cuz only way to throw out worse people but 😭

Trans women started the "gay rights" movement at the Compton's Cafeteria Riot in San Francisco in 1966, and they rekindled it at Stonewall in 1969.

In 1973, I think Sylvia Rivera was the first to say, essentially, FU to the button-down gay/lesbian apologists who were giving us the boot because we embarrassed them.

I think it's time we start protesting these "LGBTQ" orgs in Sylvia's name. And there's no better, more appropriate place to protest them than at Pride events. That's where Sylvia spoke truth to power:

The update (the statement from Equality PAC) is definitely interesting. It appears as though we got their attention, with Marci Kaptur losing their endorsement. She has a D rating with Equality Ohio. (I don't know what her previous rating was.)

This is particularly interesting: "But there is a clear line: we will not accept candidates or Members using Republican rhetoric that actively harms members of our community—particularly transgender Americans, who have been the target of sustained attacks from the Trump Administration. Campaigns can be won without scapegoating transgender people. Equality PAC will not support any candidate who chooses to campaign by targeting or demonizing members of the transgender community."

So, have other candidates who have demeaned us publicly also lost their support? Or is it just Marci Kaptur, since we are screaming about her today.

This is Tom Suozzi from 2024: “I don’t want to discriminate against anybody, but I don’t think biological boys should be playing in girls’ sports,” he said, adding that “Democrats should be saying this.” Has he apologized for calling trans girls "biological boys," and has he retracted this position? Has he improved in any way since 2024?

They damned sure better not support Gavin Newsom in 2028! His yucking it up with Charlie Kirk at our expense is etched permanently in my memory.

Kim Dunn's avatar

This is fascinating. Thanks for the update!

Sarah F's avatar

Sure, but it wasn't my update. ;-) S Baum added it to the bottom of the article after having posted it. (Equality PAC asked that they post it.)

These times are really asking a lot from us. On one hand do we “vote blue no matter who” to support the lesser of the two evils? Because with Dems we can at least have a conversation and offer education about our many communities. Or do we stand our ground in defiance even if it means letting everything we love burn?

Do we make a calculated decision or a philosophical one? Which one will keep us physically safe?

This is such a complicated choice for me at least. And I might not know the answer until I’m in the voting booth.

Here's my out-of-left-field thought: Perhaps AI will be the game changer for us. People are already up in arms about the data centers. They'll be breaking out the torches and pitchforks when they start losing jobs. Unemployment could reach 90%, causing the greatest economic crisis EVER - dwarfing the Great Depression, with its 25% unemployment rate. That's either when we become a welfare state or when people start starving in the streets. If we are left to our own means to survive, some may do so by investing assets into AI ventures in somewhat the way they invest in REITs. However, most people live paycheck to paycheck and will not have the financial resources to participate and earn investment income. Anyway, when we get into this new struggle, I doubt people are going to be thinking about trans people anymore.

I don't personally think we'll ever see equality before the law during my lifetime (maybe the next 2 decades, depending mostly on our ability to control AI), but I think we may reach a point very soon where the heat is off of us. And then we'll be back to some sort of 1970's/1980's status. It will still suck, but it will be better than what we're enduring right now.

And personally, I don't think our species can last more than a decade before the machines kill us all. I'm currently reassessing all of my priorities.

I have abandoned LGB groups and moderate Dems just as they have abandoned us. They claim a necessity for our ditching via reasons of political expediency but that's such obvious codswallop. The Republicans have won the culture war over our disenfranchisement and dehumanization not because of any merit or jack nor shit to their accusations and ad hominem, but because Dems rolled over on us with nary a fight.

I will never again trust the LGB HRC, Equality PAC, or Congressional LGBTQ Caucus. They will not receive my time, treasure, nor talent. ALL THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE.

I remember the betrayals of trans Americans in the '90s and the sights. I remember how we were let down by the HRC and the Democratic party in '07 when Barney Frank stripped the trans inclusive language of the old ENDA bill (Employment Nondiscrimination Act), claiming it was the only way to get the Dem votes for passage. But he was wrong or outright lied and the votes weren't there; conservative and moderate Dems voted with Repugs and killed a tiny scrap of equality legislation two decades in the making and we've become closer in twenty god-damned years since. The Equality Act has been brought close to a vote since but never a floor vote, and hence never passed not because of obvious and reflexive GOP opposition but because of the weakness of Dem political will and cohesion in countering GOP obstruction.

It is a mistake to support Dems now.

We said the exact same things for the exact same reasons twenty years ago, that we must hang together or hang separately, bite our tongues, swallow our bitterness, and hope for better from our allies. Fuck. That. They've screwed us AGAIN.

They are ALWAYS going to throw us under the bus, they always HAVE.

I remember groups that refused to abandon us back then, like the Bilerico Project and the Stonewall Democrats. Lets check the where-are-they-now file, shall we? They are gone or sidelined and irrelevant. Groups that went LGB and dropped us like a hot rock are large and in charge, like the HRC, and history repeats itself, AGAIN.

So the lesson now is as it's always been.

Trans people must build trans political power with trans led trans focused trans organizations and gain empowerment and voice by supporting trans led political outlets and media...like EITM...and never compromise with those who so obviously don't care about us and see us as an embarrassing liability.

We aren't the wet shaggy dog crashing the wedding reception. We aren't a liability. We are the best hope LGB and LGBTQ Americans and Dems have for differentiation between the two major parties. We are the litmus that COULD give rationale and impetus to Dems, we could be the causa belli for why they matter and are better than the GOP, showcasing what allyship and democratic principles really look like in the breach, and shame the devil himself as well as the GOPMAGAs.

But, no.

They've chosen a different path, of milquetoast performance resistance that doesn't mean shit for we queers, for trans Americans, for women, for non-whites, or for non-Christians. They're making their choices by not centering us at a moment when doing so could provide strategic initiative that would win elections across blue and purple states.

But, no.

Dems and LGB focused groups are choosing to ignore us and our humanity, and that makes it really god-damned easy for US to not choose THEM.

It seems like a party realignment is in our nation’s path. People either understand that fundamentally we are equal without exception or they don’t. Dems have claimed to be the former while blaming Republicans for the latter, but it actually wasn’t true, in either case. Neither were on board, but some individuals of all walks of life are. They chose their party affiliation based on other factors.

While some candidates are acquiescing to MAGA, others are doubling down, holding firm and are still in the running, or have won.

I don’t know what will come of all of this. I like what you wrote, though. Powerful and true.

Jaimie Hileman's avatar

I couldn't agree more.

Whether a party realignment is inevitable or SHOULD be made to be inevitable is immateril; a centrist Democratic party without a clear vision or message will surely hand America over to the fascists more certainly than almost any other avenue towards authoritarian damnation. At some point Democrats collectively...or at least a strong plurality... must realize doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results while in a rapidly changing and increasingly chaotic and corrupt electoral and governance landscape, DOESN'T WORK.

Dems have struggled since Lawrence v Texas 2006 to come to consensus on LGBTQ issues. Conservative Dems and selfish grandstanding old wealthy White gay men threw us all under the bus in 2006, blue dog Dems fubared us from complete inclusion in the 2010 ACA act and concommited inclusion in the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Middle-road Dems sidelined Dem willpower to fight GOPMAGA parliamentary BS and pass the Equality Act in 2021-2022.

Republicans will ALWAYS BE OUR ENEMY and will ALWAYS oppose us and attempt to divide, dominate, and dismember us. Without a scapegoat they've got nothing to talk about except their repulsive actual agenda and the miserable coprolitic pedobillionaires they work for. It's Dems of insufficient heart, soul, and intestinal fortitude who will actually enable the GOPMAGAs to march us up to the gibbet.

So "vote blue, no matter who?" Fuck. THAT.

These blue dog dems do know that they can just stfu, right? Like, when asked about trans people they can just say, “I don't have an opinion on this topic.” And move the fuck on? If they don't support us, the least they can do is shut their mouths.

Sarah F's avatar

There are some who call for trans people to split away from the LGBTQ. I fully understand this impulse. However, I would argue that it would not the smart thing for us to do.

We were powerless between the early 1970's and the late 1990's because the mainstream of the gay/lesbian movement excluded us from their organizations. Then behind the scenes, they would tell lawmakers in Washington that they represented us and that our rights should be put off until gay and lesbian rights could be addressed first. Their lobbyists even pretended to collaborate in lobbying events for trans people, but unbeknownst to us, they would "pre-lobby" the very same lawmakers we lobbied and tell them to smile and be pleasant, but otherwise not to listen to us - because, they said, we did not have the authority over these matters that HRC had. Even transphobic Barney Frank held himself out as the congressional authority on trans issues and the go-to representative of our community. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE NOT INSIDERS IN THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT CLAIM TO SPEAK FOR US.

What we tend to forget, in this moment, is that we do have POWER in at least one respect. We are actually the life blood of LGBTQ organizations, because they publicize our issues for fundraising purposes. WITHOUT US IN THEIR MISSION, MOST OF THEIR REVENUE STREAM DRIES UP!

I propose that we LEVERAGE OUR POWER with these organizations by getting "uppity" with them. We protest them. We embarrass them. And we cling to them like a fucking dead albatross around their necks. If they delete the "T" from their mission, they lose. And if they don't appease us, they lose. The only way to win (and keep the queer dollars rolling in) is to do right by us. We must demand it!

In the end, please remember this: MOST LGBTQ ORGS DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT LGBTQ RIGHTS, AS MUCH AS THEY CARE ABOUT KEEPING THE CONTRIBUTIONS ROLLING IN. And they need our blessings to do that.
