When are the Dems going to learn that running to the right is not an effective strategy? No one is going to vote for Republican lite when they can have the real thing.
This is always true, but this is especially true this cycle when being seen taking Republican stances is particularly toxic and radioactive given how badly the Republicans have fucked up this country and angered Americans in the last two years alone.
I'll take whatever good news I can get at this point but where the F was this statement three months ago? Or six? The midterms are in a month and now they come out against anti-trans rhetoric? Now?
Thanks, Talia. I still lament that Dennis Kucinich didn’t beat Kaptur in the Ohio Democratic primary back in 2012. In 1996, Dennis was elected as U.S. Representative for Ohio’s 10th District, and was re-elected 7 times. He was considered one of the most politically liberal members of Congress during his tenure, After the 2010 census, his district was eliminated. The new map shifted the bulk of Kucinich's territory, including his home, to the Toledo-based 9th District, represented since 1983 by fellow Democrat Marcy Kaptur. Kucinich and Kaptur competed in the primary, and Kaptur won with 56% of the vote to Kucinich's 40%. The redrawn district contained roughly 60% of Kaptur's former territory. Dennis retired from Congress when his term ended in January 2013.
Okay but is the Equality Caucus going to remove other transphobic democratic candidates from their support list? Like Don Davis? Is there going to be action behind these words or is the Equality Caucus bloviating and blowing hot air?
There isn't going to be a blue wave and the reason why is anti-Trans Dems. Dems could have made the resistance of anti-Trans fascism their signature issue, THE litmus of opposition to GOPMAGA extremism and a really frickin easy way to tell the two parties apart, considering both have history as anti labor, pro industry, pro gunboat diplomacy, and a war-loving stance.
NOPE.
Dems will always work twice as hard to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory if they can.
And there's precedence... GOPMAGAs had no qualms about making the eradication of US into THEIR number one issue but Dems couldn't be bothered to make protecting us AND ANY OTHER VULNERABLE MINORITIES from genocide a priority.
So.
Fuck 'em in November.
If I can't tell the practical difference between Dems and MAGAts, why lift a finger? Amy Acton can go perch on a barbed wire sit'n'spin.
I am grateful the Equality Caucus is starting to make some supportive noises. I look forward to seeing how they deal with anti-trans Dems other than Kaptur.
Of course the biggest question is whether the Democratic Party will demand the Equality Caucus fall in line nationally in the same way as happened in Ohio. But thank goodness at least someone is saying, "Hey, wait! This isn't right!"
I am so fucking tired of being a political football. I’m glad the Equality Caucus is drawing a line in the sand and equally frustrated that it has to be drawn in the first place.
I sent the Kaptur campaign a copy of an article I co-wrote with a colleague that addresses the false narrative opposing gender-affirming care on September 24th, which her campaign should now have. It basically says that gender is established in the brain in utero during the second half of pregnancy, and once established, it cannot be changed by any means. So, if she is still saying anti-trans things, she is doing so knowing that her words are false.
It really is this bad in Ohio. Ohio Dems are, for the most part, just more centrist Republicans. Dems aren't going to stand up for human rights in Ohio; we're going to have to do it ourselves.
I told Marcy to take a hike the minute this mess came out of her mouth. She kept begging me for money. She got a bucket full of pushback from me. Via email as well, and a petition was circulated somewhere that got my name on it. Found an article debunking Soren’s story. It’s on my Substack and Bluesky. Keep fighting back with every scrap of scientific evidence and historical facts you can find. Deluge these dipsticks with Trans Joy and positive stories. Let them see your faces and hear your voices at town hall meetings.

Before primaries would be a good time to find out this
Thank you for the reporting, Baum.
It should aways be remembered Kaptur is a Social Conservative apparently of long standing.

She has actually unironically made the "longer skirt" argument blaming victims for rape.
OH needs a change of leadership.

Ah, geez! I didn't realize that's why Kucinich is no longer in office. He was a really good guy.
He was, Sarah. I voted for him twice (in the Dem primaries) when he unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004 and 2008.

If one of us in not equal, then none of us are equal.
I like your short to the point comment. As an ally I totally agree.

Finally, we are seeing some teeth

Thanks, Equality Caucus! As they say in the U.S. Marines, “No one is left behind!”
If this what she stands for - she not anyone’s vote
We need democratic majority but not with her.

Equality Caucus finally got out of bed and realized "Oh yeah we're supposed to be allies or something".
