It’s ABOUT TIME!! The irony is that the years of “conservative” government in the UK with Brexit and the rest of the chaos, ushered in such catastrophic setbacks in pediatrics that health indicators toppled to levels not seen in peace time in the west in decades. But yes! Let’s focus on the “CATASTROPHE” of trans care.

These 'conservative' or far right politicians never care about actual issues affecting real people, they only incite hate and fear as a distraction to cover up their incompetence. Take for example my homeland Hungary with record high inflation, huge state debt, corruption, quickly dropping standard of living and economic recession. The population struggles more and more financially, children are going hungry for the first time in our modern history but Orbán, his ministers - also his economic minister who caused this mess - unscrupulously give themselves HUGE pay raise several times a year referring to the inflation they themselves caused!

What a nightmare!

It certainly is a nightmare, a great proportion of our population became economic refugees and are working in Western-Europe, LGBT+ individuals became actual refugees and most of our intellectuals fled to lecture at famous universities like Harvard and Central European University (CEU). By the way CEU was originally in Hungary but it was chased away because they didn't fit into government ideology (lies). There are no experts here anymore to undo the harm that was done.

It's the same playbook here stateside. The Republicans want to eliminate subsidies for healthcare in all forms while infant mortality is going up and life expectancy is down. They lead the charge to end " dangerous and experimental" trans healthcare, as if they cared.

And, she's the one trying to make being transgender functionally illegal in the UK -- and -- a part of the effort to "eradicate" transgender people from public life, aka, existing.

The self-referential cluelessness about what she says is a holocaust is staggering.

The review "deliberately does not contain subject matter experts or people with lived experience of gender services." Next up, a report on Formula 1 Racing by people who don't own cars, can't drive and exclusively take public transportation because they hate cars.

Better analogy: a report on abortion support services and surgical techniques by men who believe abortion is never justified even in the case of rape or a threat to the mother's life. That's the psychology. :(

Since that fucking propaganda piece just won't stay dead, here's a series of video essays by Youtuber Cass Eris which is IMO one of the best, most thorough takedowns of Shrier's bullshit book out there: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIK-x5uT6oS-jLoc8axeD_zZ_TDK0OTeb

The more I think about this the more bizarre it is. A pediatrician heading up a medical evidence review recommends to clinicians before the review that they read a polemic written by a WSJ reporter who has no medical training. That's totally f-cked up. They're supposed to BE the medical professionals. Total bad faith.

As horrible as this one revelation is (standing out well above the rest of the horror), it is really in keeping with the political times, and the poor departed spirit of George Orwell must feel the pain. Republican politicians in the U.S. almost routinely describe their progressive opponents as Nazis (when their behavior and announced policies fit well with textbook definitions of fascism, although in public, progressives rarely articulate that).

A few minutes ago I read in Haaretz (English version) that a Netanyahu-supporting journalist on one of their public TV channels "compared Israel's military advocate general, who ordered an investigation into the reservists suspected of gang-raping the Palestinian detainee, to the Judenrat – the Jewish councils that implemented Nazi policies toward Jews during the Holocaust." My point is not to argue pro or con of that war, but that the extreme conservative side thinks it's fine to compare their opponents to Nazis and the Holocaust.

The transenmity in the Cass Report is not a stand-alone prejudice; we are up against a system that wants to establish a mind-controlling as well as behavior-controlling authoritarian state. Like totalitarians usually, they are well-organized and disciplined. We have only information to fight back with.

"we are up against a system that wants to establish a mind-controlling as well as behavior-controlling authoritarian state."

As a citizen of such an autocracy I give additional info: yes they want to establish that mind controlling system with bigoted, corrupt leaders, becoming rich of our tax money without being able to or willing to do any work that makes the citizens' life better. Unapologetic stealing and lying and decades long connections to the organized crime. They poison children's souls in schools with their nationalistic, racist hate and exonerate child abusers in the church while they erroneously blame the LGBTQ+ community with 'child abuse' as a projection of their own shortcomings. Always the same propaganda in the international far right.

Thanks for the support Jayna, I hope to spread the word and uncover the international far right and what it means when they come to power.

There is a strong anti-LGBTQ+ movement in the EU now, led by Orbán, Meloni, Putin and such. I am planning to start a blog, YT channel etc when the opportunity comes to spread the truth and prevent them from ruining people's lives.

It is a source of never-ending amazement to those of us in the U.S. (and the U.K. shows a close linkage) that the country we "rescued" from its temporary insanity and whose name still evokes memories of the worst fascism is now the leader in the defense of real liberty and democracy. In case you know German, this episode from Jan Böhmermann (ZDF Magazin Royale) is a breath of fresh air. Even in the rightward winds of today, the AfD has the least traction of any of those parties.

Erin,

Thanks for another great article.

I do have one quibble. You wrote:

"The latest revelation of Dr. Cass’s ideological bias towards transgender care could further erode scientific support for the Cass Review..."

Given all of the incredible bias and the shoddy methodology that pervades The Cass Review, my view is that there is no such thing as "scientific support" for this document.

Anyone who has read it and concludes that it was an unbiased review clearly knows nothing about scientific rigor.

So, is it a dangerous and harmful document? Absolutely! Does it have ANY scientific value? I would argue that it is irredeemably flawed. Someday, its sole value will be as documentation of the lengths to which conservatives were willing to go in order to use care for transgender kids as a political weapon while having no regard for the impact that their actions would have on the kids they were using.

Pure evil, no science to be found anywhere in sight!

I feel like the issues arising from the Cass Report have very little to do with its scientific support and far more to do with its UNscientific support, it's dissemination and material for those unwilling, uncaring, or unable to examine the discrediting and debunking done by major medical associations and scientist. The Cass Review losing any shreds of scientific support or may still have will not deter any of those people

I've had a couple of doctors in the past who's words and actions were very unscientific and based on their own bias's and ignorance. They are an embarrassment to their profession and their colleagues. It's similar to the situation with doctors who think covid isn't real and isn't a threat. It's very difficult for the rest of us to reign them in. Only when their peers speak up about them do we get any action.

I'm sure Cass will have a comfy retirement on speaking engagements and "expert testimony" working for the heritage institute and other like organizations.

It is certainly a travesty that intrusive conservative politicians have taken control of our medical decisions. I say "our" as the decisions being made impact everyone. FINALLY we are seeing some speak out in opposition of the lies. Today I am heading to the Eugene, Oregon Pride Festival and I will be a walking billboard in support of getting out the vote.

Currently, of the worldwide damage her influence has caused I can only take comfort in that I’m of the belief that at the end of Life, we go through a review of our entire lives and are held accountable by being made to see through the eyes of those we helped and hurt how our actions affected them. Hilary Cass, (I am loathe to call her Dr.) will see the pain, suffering and harm she (and by extension her minions) caused to every person (transgender and otherwise, i.e., transgender children’s parents) touched by her works.

In the end, we escape nothing and she will be held accountable and will have to atone for what she has done. She may reject her responsibility for a time, and will find successive lives increasingly difficult until she acknowledges the truth of her past behaviors and makes things right. I only hope that her atonement comes sooner rather than later . . . I’m just sayin’

A very insightful comment. Pls see the link below.

"‘any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

killing members of the group

causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part

imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group

forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

(...)

Actions do not need to lead to deaths to be considered to be acts of genocide – causing serious bodily or mental harm or the deprivation of resources such as clean water, food, shelter or medical services can be regarded as inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction.
