Shameful. This is how it starts. This is how we start erasing trans children. And this is why I got involved in the California Democratic party as a delegate, to stop this bs. Newsom has thrown our community under the bus. Pardon my language here, but he's a total tool and self serving asshole.

What language are we pardoning, exactly? I see nothing but a perfectly factual description of that egregious shithammer. Thank you for doing the work out there. 🙏

Thank you. And I like that term, shit hammer! I live in Fresno, and sit on the board for PFLAG down here. We are trying to help this mom and support her child. The word "fuckwards" has been thrown around in conversation when describing the assholes trying to make this girl's life miserable.

I don’t think any apology for language is needed, Madison. To do so is to diminish the power of your feelings/opinions. I mean this with kindness. I’m guilty of apologizing and always providing an “out” for others.

Old habits. I was a mechanic for over 20 years, I swear like a sailor. Have been known to drop one too many f-bombs during a "polite" conversation. So I try to keep things civil at this point. But you are correct, it does diminish my power when I do this!

I was a System Admin for 25 and swear the same amount TBH.

(Now I work in an office with mostly researchers and "proper" engineers, so I get looks as well) I spent much of my career in data centers where nobody else could hear two feet away from you because of the HVAC so every third word out of my mouth these days is a swear.

Don't apologize. Wear it with pride! :)

Now, if they’ll do the same for sports scholarships, and put floor to ceiling stalls in the locker rooms, it will remove all the things that conservatives CLAIM they’re trying to stop. We know it isn’t what they REALLY want. But it would at least remove their current excuses.

Nah. They'll take the same logic (give cis girl a spot if a trans girl wins) to argue for the logical next step (give cis girl #1 if a trans girl wins).

This opens the door.

I am so ashamed of being a California resident today. our Governor is a spineless coward who has bowed down to the maga pressure. This is a dark day in California.

So if there are 8 spots and a trans girl comes in eighth, the cis girl who came in ninth also gets in. But if the cis girl comes in eighth and the trans girl comes in ninth, I assume that the same courtesy won't be extended. That's discrimination.

I'm happy for the extra cis girl who gets to compete, but this isn't the way to build equity.

First half: agree.

Second half: Why? She lost fair and square. She didn't like the results? Run better. No, this cis girl lost, she should be out.

I wrote this before the article was updated, I think, when it was only talking about qualifying for the finals and not about medaling. I think it's great if more girls get to qualify, just problematic in the way they had structured it.

Now with the update it seems like they're actually just creating a whole separate category for transgender girls, which is even more problematic but for which my comment no longer really applies.

I hate this country. Can't just treat trans people like everybody else, always have to soothe the egos of bigoted idiots.

There are scummy people out there who know hate sells and there's a ready market out there willing to buy. It's a racket.

How are they gonna choose which non qualifying cis girls get slots at states? You can either run your event fast enough (or throw or jump far enough) to qualify for the statewide meet, or you can't. This is ridiculous.

This is going to be a long haul, but there is so much anti-inclusiveness, homophobic rhetoric and belief in the US right now. Not new. Similar to what minorities have experienced for centuries. And backed by so-called "Christians." We need to continue and not allow trump and the other republicans, harm our children or adults.

The irony is that Newsom is trying to advance his future political ambitions by appearing more "moderate", but he's probably already destroyed any chance he ever had of being nominated for president. Turning against your own base is never a good political strategy.

Please never let anyone get away with using the terms 'biological women' or 'biological men'.

Explain that this framing has no basis in biological reality, because transitioning means changing one's biology.

Expand full comment
Joan the Dork's avatar

And also, as a simple matter of accurate terminology, there is no such thing as a human being who 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵 biological. Cis, trans, whatever. We're all made of living tissue. Of 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺. This "biological woman/man" shit is just an underhanded way to dehumanize us- to get others to perceive us as 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 instead of 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦.

Expand full comment
Lori's avatar

No, I don't think that's what this is about. They don't think we're *not biological.* They just think all AMAB people are 'biologically male' and all AFAB people are 'biologically female'.

The point is that this stops being true in any biologically meaningful sense as soon as someone starts transitioning.

Sports as it is today is inherently unfair. We don't put kids who are similar abilities and size together. If you're a short kid, good luck getting into basketball. If you are have a thin build, good luck with being a weightlifting champion. I have seen my kid play football against stacked teams where most of the team is adult size. If you can't keep up you get sidelined. This isn't about sports or bathrooms, it's about ridding the world of who they see as weak degenerates. They believe that they are superior and should be ultimate rulers because of it. It's just pure hate and intolerance. They have no shame or remorse. We can't let any of this stuff go unchallenged.

I feel like his support of gay marriage when he was the SF mayor was a matter of political expediency. It was a way to gain support and help him become governor. I never liked him but voted for him because he was the best option. He constantly flip flopped during Covid, changing his directives to public health depending on political pressure (I worked for CDPH). So, 1 star out of 5, do not recommend for dem nomination for president.

I see your point. I was less interested at that point in my life about why he did the things he did as long as they were good for humans, but I haven't paid attention to the details since I moved out of state.

The thing is, we have a not entirely dissimilar situation here in WA, too. Ferguson was a fantastic AG, but as governor we're left wondering what happened to all that fire.

When the national government starts threatening politicians, arresting judges and even threatening incredibly moneyed, famous people, nobody is safe. If it gets bad enough, eventually everybody will fold. It's not going to be a matter of "if", but "when".

I respectfully disagree. This matters deeply to the child who's getting doxxed, bullied, and threatened, and all the people who love and support her. Sports is just another way they're trying to erase and dehumanize trans kids. If it's ok to treat them as less than or other on the field, it's okay to do it everywhere. This all matters. It's all worthy or our attention, outrage, and effort.
