Incumbent Democrat Shawn Thierry, who famously cast a vote to ban gender affirming care in Texas, lost her primary to Lauren Ashley Simmons, a queer woman.
Let's take the victories when and where they come. But we are living in an era of stunt legislation, enabled by Trumpian grotesquerie.
I'm wondering how long before we hear of legislation declaring estrogen, testosterone, and hormone blockers controlled substances.
Where abortion and reproductive policy goes, trans policy will follow; perhaps vice versa. In the minds of those who would see us eliminated from public life, trans rights and repro rights are essentially identical, joined at the genitals, literally and figuratively.
Thank you, Erin, for all you do! Thanks to all of you out there!
The thing is, estrogen is used by many cis women for various medical purposes. So making it a controlled substance might interfere with general medical care for cis people, and you could imagine the outcry. I’m not saying it isn’t a concern, it is, just that when cis and trans people use the same medication, it gets harder for the right-wing zealots.
Republicans don’t care. They don’t care about what the majority thinks or what cis people think as long as they get to harm their targets, which in this case is trans people.
AND BIPOC people. They're following Project 2025 to the letter, which is mostly about trans people, but also about any minority of people in this country including LGBQ+.
They want this place to go back to Jim Crow, which is disgusting. I was born during that, and it was not good for Black people at all. That's what all this CRT hysteria is about. They don't even know what CRT is, but they'll disinform everybody that it's something bad ... just like they do trans people. SMFH
That'll never happen. Know why? There isn't anything to cultivate or build for free anymore. Not unless they're willing to train everybody for high-tech. Besides, we'd kill everybody first. You're not hanging in my circles, and trust me, WE ARE NOT GOING BACK! The LGBTQ+ can be pussies all day long, but Black people are not.
I agree with Samuel Abram's comment. What do Republicans today care about the rights of *any* women, cis or trans? The Trump acolytes would do this in a heartbeat if they could.
I'll be damned if this will sweep our society, I'm already enraged over the effects of Dobbs, if they're going to just ignore the constitution, they will pay a price for it, retroactively, on any such issue.
They already are controlled substances at the VA, but I'm not having a problem getting it ... yet. It was a little touch-and-go when they wanted me to sign for my T, but I complained and they stopped. Don't know why they decided to do that crap, but fortunately they went back to sending it USPS/no signature required.
I am especially glad to hear that his victory came from the state of Texas. Happy dancing here! I am off to google and find some celebration videos of the win.
I am so tired of legislators having a voice on health care. Be it gender affirming care or health care for those that identify as women. I find myself disappointed that more physicians/doctors are not voicing any outrage about legislators dictating how they treat their patients.
I believe "Erin in the Morning" has been medicine for my mental health. Thank you Erin!
Erin's page has been truly invaluable, for me as well. It reminds me not to lose hope, that there are people on our side who are tireless, it encourages me to stay strong.
Yeah, I'm disappointed in physicians/doctors not making more of a fuss, too. They're just too sedate and probably afraid of thugs going after their licenses. And, that's HER victory.
To be fair, I don’t blame the doctors; they’re having a hard time enough providing care when they could be put in jail for certain procedures (such as abortion or gender-affirming care).
This is such an indictment on the democrats who think that this issue isn’t important beyond trans community and their allies. I hope to hell the rest of the TX Democratic Party is listening because families like mine had to take our talents and our talented trans youth out of their state last summer. Folks Thierry enabled the Republican Party with willingness to give up on my kid.
Thank you, Erin, for your fantastic reporting! Hopefully this serves as a lesson to all those out there who think that trojan-horse politics can gain an advantage!
Fingers crossed anti-trans politics continue proving to be a losing battle. The fight is far from over but things are starting to look a little better (or at least less bleak) after the mess that has been this year so far.
Erin- this by far has been my best article click of the day. Thank you for your dogged determination to keep all of us informed of the good news (like this) and the bad news. 🏳️⚧️
Excellent! I still believe voters/taxpayers still have a strong voice in politics. Thank you, for sharing the update with us Erin, and for all your tireless efforts. Sending lots of Love to You, and Everyone from London, Ontario, Canada.
Hahahahahaha. GOOD FOR HER! See, this is how it's done, folks. We've got to oust them MF's out of congress and let them wallow in their silly-ass tears somewhere else. VOTE like your life depends on it!!!
More proof that anti-trans positions are not the political winner that the right wing thinks they are. But of course that won’t stop the GOP hate machine. In fact, the 2024 platform for the Texas GOP is announced, and it is really extreme - something right out of Project 2025. It’s frightening.
If the conservatives continue to pursue heavy regulation of hormones, they’ll be shooting themselves in the foot (with respect to prostate cancer & menopause becoming more prevalent with the aging population).
Yeah, this stuff is just beyond stupid. Controlled substances are supposed to be recreational drugs, with at least a claimed danger to the public, this is abusing those laws to achieve a perverse political goal. It will not go unnoticed and they will regret screwing with innocent people's lives.
Good. It won't shake the GQP's control of the TX legislature, but hopefully will send a strong message to any other Democrats out there who might be tempted to throw us under a bus.
This is a heartening to read. I'm in Georgia 11th US House district (solid red). Our openly gay, repeat Democratic nominee Antonio Daza lost the primary last week to transphobe and DeSantis contributer Katy Stamper. It is rumored that many conservatives "crashed" the open primary by choosing to vote in our Democratic primary and then put this bigot on our ticket. Even though real Dems don't stand a chance in the general, It is disheartening to see that we can't even nominate a candidate to platform our existence in a positive way.

Its a pleasure to be able to do this work every day, as hard as it is sometimes.
I bet it is hard, Erin. Hope you have the support you need, as you unravel these things and present them to us.
Yep, making hormones and hormone related medicines controlled substances is already in progress.
Testosterone is already controlled.
Louisiana just made Mifepristone controlled, which is a progesterone blocker.
Other states and groups are trying to make contraception illegal, which are basically hormones.
Making estrogen and progesterone and androgen blockers controlled or illegal would just a small step from those policies.
The thing is, estrogen is used by many cis women for various medical purposes. Not just Jim Crow; They’d reinstall slavery for non-prison populations.

Kate Cox is cisgender ...

What a loser. Glad Thierry lost. Her crocodile tears on Texas House Floor were disgusting.

Joel...so well worded and expressed. The haters have such a loud voice it is easy to forgot all the love.

I didn't know about this race until now, very encouraging at least within this district, if TX is borked generally. Great reporting as always, Erin.

Bye 👋 Thierry. Sucks to suck.
