I suppose we know how this script goes, but I do hope this time it goes our way.
"But the district and the teacher had many who showed up in her defense, and the meeting finally closed with no capitulation to any of the anti-trans activists in the room." <-- Very, very good to hear!
"It is important to WCPSS policies regarding employee dress and appearance should protect children from being exposed to more complex and mature gender-identity questions and concepts at too young of an age."
As a trans child who would have been immeasurably helped by the visibility of myself in adults, it's offensive that this is categorized as a 'mature' topic. My suffering in the darkness of a closet that didn't even have a name when I was a child was torture and now that we have a name for it, it's called 'mature'.
Children aren't empty vessels to be filled, they're developing adults with complex identities and deserve exposure to diversity and support as early as possible.
Ahh yes, the policing of our bodies and how we dress and bring out the old and tired right-wing religious tropes, whipped up by the flames of people not even in the school district (even national anti- activists piled on as Erin pointed out). Stay strong Wake County School Board!!
I choose to focus on the fact that so many people showed up in support of our community. In this moment in history - when support for us is no longer performative and carries serious costs - certain people still came forward and stood with us as allies.
96% of all child sex abuse cases resulting in convictions in the United States are by cisgender MEN, not women of any sort. We Trans folk are so much more likely to be the victim of such attacks and we report at low rates because of the increased risks if we should be so careless as to choose to attempt justice.
In my time facilitating trans femme peer support groups it was rare to encounter a woman WITHOUT at least one experience of sexual harassment or abuse under the age of 18. I personally believe the rates of abuse for cisgender girls and women, trans female persons, and nonbinary folks are far, FAR higher and our police, reporting, and adjudication systems are all FUCKED.
Pedophilia is a cisgender disease.
If "we" as a society REALLY want.to keep "all children safe", cis het men would have to be prevented from any contact with them until age 18 and even then the youth should be armed with a beanbag gun, milspec pepper spray, shock gloves, and a kevlar hoodie. It's only fair, considering the strength, experience, predatoriness, privilege, and monetary advantages adult cis het males possess.
I mean...if we REALLY cared about children.
Nine EU countries have investigated citizens appearing in the Epstein Files plus the UK. Dozens have been arrested, many quit office, dynasties in disarray, jobs, CEO positions lost, several gone to PRISON.
He sounds like he would prefer critical thinking and literacy to be banned too. Possibly even higher mathematics as they could be used in ungodly ways. And the biological sciences, evolution, microbiology, virology, genetics, monoclonal antibodies, stem cell research, advanced biologics, IVF, all would I'm sure be RIGHT OUT.
Wonder how he feels about God's will vs. Viagra and Cialis?
Again, we have a group of zealot individuals and organizations pushing unfounded, bigoted, and racist fears about a transgender teacher who hasn’t even had the opportunity to step into the classroom.
They showed up at a school meeting to oppose her before she has even begun teaching. Instead of attacking a teacher based on prejudice, perhaps they should focus their energy on the budget cuts threatening their schools—cuts that can actually harm students, teachers, and the quality of education. Creating teacher dress codes is not the answer.
Thankfully, there were people who stood up and defended this teacher. That is what courage looks like: judging someone by their ability to teach, not by their gender identity.
Our children deserve better than fear, hatred, and bigotry masquerading as concern for education.
Erin Paré's Dem opponent in NC HD 37 is Winn Decker. Show him some support! https://app.oath.vote/cart?q=Winn+Decker Contributions made through OATH go 100% to the candidate (aside from voluntary tips to OATH) - AND OATH doe NOT share your contact info with the candidates, so no ensuing spam!
This isn’t about trans people. Any power the government is given, they apply to everyone sooner or later. This is rich white people feeling entitled to tell EVERYONE how to dress, abusing a fake issue to make precedent for it. They’re mentally very, very sick people.
Oh yay. Further regression in to forced gender roles. Which is i am sure part of rhe point. Besides having someone to collectively hate and general policing of how people are allowed to exist in public.
As a 67 year old trans woman who discovered herself after 63 years. These laws have nothing to do with protecting women and girls. They just want trans people to be gone. I am not going anywhere anytime soon. That's promise. I am so glad I live in Illinois. A very supportive community, a suburb of Chicago, in Illinois. I wish everyone was as lucky as I am.
I absolutely love that both Christine Jorgensen and Marsha P. Johnson were listed as community speakers. I’m guessing most at the meeting missed their significance. I agree with others here: Stay strong Wake County School Board!
Thank you for the reporting, Erin.

Regressive, Boomer nonsense.

As a mother, my immediate thoughts went to the students. Adults willing to express their bigoted, hateful, opinions at the expense of the students.
Release the Epstein Files.

But NOT in the USA.
Weird, hunh?
Gawd again. The contagion spreads.
Shaking my head at the ridiculous word salad by Aaron Driver. Maybe it helps that anti-trans activists sound so goofy?

> Middle Creek Parental Rights
If the SPLC weren’t occupied with the feds right now on bullshit charges, they’d designate Middle Creek Parental Rights a hate group.

People who choose to identify as bitchy bigots should not be dictating school policy or personnel.
